Scratched Cases: Causes and Cures - Redding Reloading Equipment

Nickel plated cases are often associated with die scratching problems. Small particles of the hard nickel plating may be present from trimming and/or deburring operations and can find their way inside the dies.

Maybe that is why I have never had any trouble, I don't trim pistol straight wall cases, and I have never loaded any nickle rifle cases.. I always buy the cheap brass stuff..

Obviously it did.

And the moon landings were faked too...

I'd need to see proof.

nickel and brass are softer than the tool steel of the die. I've loaded multiple thousands of cases, including nickle. As James said, many times, nickle re-sizes easier.

Did you STICK a nickel case and dig it out with a screwdriver and damage the die? That I'd believe.

Did you leave a nickel case in a die for a long time till they simply coroded together, and die damage resulted? That I'd believe.

Did you run a nicklel/brass/copper plated steel case into a die, and possible cause problems? That I'd believe.

Did you run DIRTY / uncleaned nickel cases into a die, and thus let the grit damage the die? That I'd believe.

brinnel hardness of tool steels are in the 600-900 range.. nickel is in the 100 range.

If you actually read that redding info page, you will notice that the nickel is not SCRATCHING the die, but may be sticking to the inside of the die, and scratching the brass run thru it..same way that brass chips can stick in a die and then GALL the next piece.

This goes back to my initial comment.

dirty dies and sticking dirty cases in. the redding article backs this up. You stick in dirty brass into your dies, you get junk stuck or embeded into your dies.

Hornady was not at fault here.. the reloader with bad cleaning etiquette was at fault.

Yup.. article was pretty clear.. sticking dirty cases into your die will cause problem. even brass chips on the cases from trimming will do exactly the same. they pressure or contact weld or smear/gall onto the interior surface of the die, and then they deform the cases run thru.

clean yer tools. :)

"And the moon landings were faked too... I'd need to see proof."<<<<<<<<Yes it was, they actually landed in Arizona, my forth cousin once removed told me:thumbsup:

The die was scoring the side of the cases. Eventually a case got stuck in the die and the bottom broke off of the casing. I was unable to get it out and Hornady sent me a new die. I always tumble my brass and I was using lube. You can call it whatever you want, but that's what happened. It wasn't Hornadys fault and the die was long out of warranty. I didn't expect Hornady to send me a new die. They volunteered that.

Now the truth comes out.

As expected, foreign material lodged in the die.

I live how that equates to nickel cases ruin dies ;)

Half of my big safari cases are nickel, and most of my revolver brass is or was nickel.. Some of it I old enough that the nickel micron thin electroplating wore down till you see brass the it.

All my dies must be ruined by now ( gasp ) oh the horror!

:)
