Totally OT: Power Plant tour

Which plant was that? We probably worked on it years ago.

It was the big paper mill in Antioch California.... changed ownership over the years and then was bought to close it down... lots of good jobs went away.

Thing is the plant never had a losing month... deep water port, infrastructure in place, etc... the parent company just had over capacity so California got the ax.

To get a red bage to work in a nuke today is about 1" thick with papers to fill out, then if you pass that it's the psy.test. you pass that you good to work Cost to Cost but I don't think it worth all the BS[/QUOTE

My Clearance level is Classified. Could have filled out another sheet of paper and Secret but then security would have been calling and pestering family and neighbours.
Then again they have quota hiring and let in some people who by country of origin , religion and extra curricular activities should not be on site.

I talked to guys that worked there now if you work on the hot side you can only work a few years because of radiation

Heck, I had to take a psych test just to get a yellow badge (admin buildings only) back in 2000!

That's not true for nuke plants in general. They use strict monitoring to ensure you don't get exposed to high levels. People work at nuke plants for 20, 30, 40 years, even on the hot side. Due to PPE, actual radiation exposure in a nuke plant is minimal. Likely less than my exposure, which comes from sitting in front of three monitors all day every day.

There is some difference between the US and Canada. At some times, the CANDU reactors have so much issue with Tritium, they do "burn out" workers. In the US we don't have a similar situation and never approach limits unless someone does something stupid.

That is not how it works. Total yearly dose is controlled. A person can work at a nuclear plant for 25 years. If you want to worry about dose check your basement for Alpha radiation from radon gas and don't fly in high altitude aircraft.

That is why we wear a comfo, ram's horn, a plastic suit or double plastics for protection from Beta dose due to H3. A Candu is rather tame compared to a light water reactor.

I'm just telling what he told me at work!!!.

Had an opportunity today to walk through a coal fired power plant. Thought maybe you'd appreciate seeing the inside of one. Security was surprisingly simple. Once we got through the front gate, we pretty much had unescorted access. Probably would be different if this was a nuclear plant.

Did you remove some attachments? I'm not seeing anything.
