Well, as a counterexample, I bought a 2004 6.0l Powerstroke F250 4years ago. I have about 75k miles and I put about 5k miles per year on it. Not a lot, and maybe this is the problem.

Anyway, I have taken it hunting for the past 3 years and every year it has been towed home from about 125 miles away. The first year It was also towed once while were were in elk camp, and once again after I got it home and presumable had it all fixed. That is 5 tows home in 3 years and 15,000 miles. I change oil at 5000 miles, always Rotella T-6 synthetic, which is pretty good oil.

I would sell it in a heartbeat except that when I hunt with a vehicle that usually involves driving it through some pretty heavy brush which destroys the paint job. So, my project this year is "bulletproofing" the engine, which is in pieces in my garage right now. New heads, new oil cooler, new EGR cooler, new High pressure oil pump, and new head bolts. Also long-life coolant. We will see if this improves reliability, but the only thing I have been able to rely on previously is that it will get towed home.

You probably bought a used 6.0 that the previous owner just did oil changes on, which has been proven to be fatal for a 6.0. Sounds like you have leaks in the High Pressure oil system and a clogged oil cooler.

It's not the trucks fault, it's the previous owner that should be blamed. Sounds like you have a good plan.

I would also suggest resealing the fuel injectors, It's like $5 for each fuel injector orings through Ford. Replacing the stand pipes and dummy plugs as well.

Larger wheels will kill mileage much more than larger tires on same wheels.

Why exactly was it towed home each time?

Larger wheels will kill mileage much more than larger tires on same wheels.

Do you mean above...even if you have replicated the outside tire + wheel circumference of both combinations so they are they same? Not sure why that would happen? Thanks...TMR

Yes because the wheels are heavier than the same size rubber tires so they are harder to turn, keep turning, and stop.

The farther away from the center the weight is, the greater the rotating mass and the faster it spins the worse it gets.

New '16 F-350 DRW bought in November. 6k miles, gets used mostly for hauling and towing. Hauls loads of hay and tows farm implements, and horse trailers including a 10k# gooseneck living quarters trailer. Absolutely no problems so far.

I have a 2013 F250 with the 6.7. Just had the EGR cooler replaced at 54000 miles. It was the first time back to the dealer. The cooler was completely clogged with soot. The truck has 1250 hrs and 100 idle hours.

Also I am averaging 18.1 mpg and around 14-15 when towing.

Not to sound too ignorant - but wasn't the 6.0 outsourced to International; how about the 6.7L?

6.0 is international.
6.4 is international.
6.7 is Ford in house.

The 6.0 was what international put in all their busses. There was no emissions, used elc coolant and it ran fine. The 6.7 is no slouch. It's a strong design and going to a vgt turbo was huge.

I had a 15 platinum diesel and a 15 XL gas. Both 3/4 ton crew cab 4x4s. No problems out of either one in the 25k or so miles we put on each one other than the AC compressor blowing apart on the diesel at about 10k miles. It literally busted in pieces while I was sitting at a stop light and was towed in and fixed under warranty.

We now have two 16 GMC duramaxes. I like the ride on the highway better on the GMC and the GMC's are getting better mileage than the 6.7 diesel was. We haven't broke anything on the GMC's yet but the fords did seem tougher to me.

I don't really care about brand they are work trucks and we get rid of them before the warranty is up. We got GMC this time because they made us the best deal. When it comes time to trade I will look at ford, GM, and dodge and go with the best deal.
