... The pot holes around here can definitely persuade you to hold the wheel with both hands. ..Some can literally cause you to get thrown into another lane.. True story.

With about 6 months on a 2016 F250 super duty the only complaint has been the steering... not a problem on good roads... rather unexpected on normal country roads with the usual imperfections.

Bought it local and the Dealer sales woman has been great... had a better price in writing about 90 miles away... decided to go local and she said no one beats her price and then showed her the quote and said done... didn't even ask.

She is the top Super Duty sales person and owns a horse operation...

Larger wheels will kill mileage much more than larger tires on same wheels.

What? Unless it's a steel rim, how does larger rims (wheels) kill mileage more than larger tires if the over all diameter is the same?

Assuming the tires are the same width and the same tread pattern, I'd think smaller wheels (rims) would cause worse MPG... reason is that rubber truck tires seem to weigh more than aluminum rims. Still since over tire diameter and tread are the same, I doubt anyone would notice.

Without specific details, that statement is false.

First, you have to define "larger." Wider? Greater diameter? Greater profile (tires)? "Larger wheels" wile maintaining the same tire diameter?

Overall diameter
Overall weight
Overall weight distribution from center of wheel
Rolling resistance

These all affect mileage.

Your statement demands a lot of questions to determine how you came to that conclusion. Simply trading wheel-for-tire (and vice versa) doesn't support any conclusions without more data.

Yeah, same for my 2016. Is is due to its solid front axle design. It is a very basic, but tough, design.

Designing a front suspension that is tough -and- maintains the same direction (steering not changing) is difficult. In our Fords, when the front end goes through travel changes, the steering geometry changes. Ford chose tough over ideal handling. This steering geometry change is worse when only one wheel travels.

IFS is, I believe, GM's current design. Much, much better handling (sports car like), however not near as tough. Pros and cons to everything.

For a 3/4 and up truck, I would rather have tough.

All the manufacturers have gone through design changes over their lifetime. I think Ford has had some of the goofiest.

Fords current design is very simple... but does have some negatives... which is inherent to that design.

Not trying to derail the thread but just a comment on the larger tires and gas mileage, I just went from the factory tires which were 245/75/17's to 285/70/17's and I lost about 1 to 1&1/2 miles per gallon when I upgraded tires this was on a 2015 Chevrolet 2500 HD.

Are you correcting for rolling difference? I would guess you are about 5% off your n the speedo and odometer.

The Chevrolet dealer wanted $150.00 to recalibrate speedometer and said I could be off as much as 10 mph, so I took a hand held gps unit and it shows me to only be 2mph faster than the speedometer says at at 65 and I wasn't about to pay the dealer that much for that little amount, but without doing it I have to go by what my hand calculations are for mpg.

We have a 2016 F350 SRW 6.7L, but only 10K miles on it so reliability in the long term is unknown. We are running 34" tires on 18" wheels. Our local Ford dealer (Alamosa, CO) charged $18 to reprogram for the tire size. We get 14 mpg with a 3000 lbs pop-up camper on the back (hwy), or about 10 to 11 mph pulling gooseneck equipment trailer weighing 6 tons. I have no complaints about the truck or its mileage.

The larger wheel package will always be noticeably heavier. First, when going bigger, you are removing the lightest part of the tire (sidewall) and replacing it with a heavier wheel (higher side loads = thicker).
