Why do people think it's okay to call/text late?

This topic reminds one of a soap opera!

On and on with no ending and no solution!!

Is there a tractor or ending in sight?

What I have learned from this thread:
Do not post a venting thread about even the simplest of things.

And, I agree with the OP; rude and inconsiderate is rude and inconsiderate, regardless of the technology that conveys it.

Or can prevent it.

Like I said, this thread has been an eye opener. I thought that texting late at night was just as rude as calling. But as it turns out, many people equate texting much closer to e-mailing. Which I do not find to be rude if someone wants to email 24/7.

And thall303.....if you are looking for a solution or ending to this thread.....go troll another thread. As I have said numerous times now, not looking for a solution or ending....because just as so many have already said....there is no cure or solution to stupid and rude people.

Sure, measures can be put on place to limit their interaction and annoyance if us....but not without negative consequences.... that outweigh the good they do in my case.

Life goes on, I got my rant off my chest. And will continue down this same path and just put up with the ignorant people a few times a year. Cause as of right now, the only solution without side-effects that would solve this issue would be if someone cured stupid. And we are a long ways from that

In retrospect you should have included the word RANT at the end of the thread title.

Don't feel that way, venting or rant threads are good for the rest of us. It often lets us feel more social.

If the OP had made it clear from the thread title perhaps we wouldn't have been so eager to inundate him with suggestions he did not want.
Or can prevent it.

I used to positively HATE texting, primarily because I always had a combination of small keys and fat fingers. Now I just dislike texting. But I also ignore my phones unless I'm expecting a call.

Now you are just being mean to other threads, telling troll hall to go to them!

!

Perhaps???

But I don't think that always putting "rant" at the end of a title is necessary. It doesn't take a genius to figure out I was upset and venting/ranting after reading the first post. And I doubt anyone would have posted differently if I spelled it out that I was ranting.

But the title of the thread was accurate....and not a rhetorical question. I was indeed looking for an answer. An answer as to if other people thought it was acceptable to call or text late.....and if so, why?

The thread veered in the direction of turning phones off, or on vibrate, or disabling texts after certain hours, second lines.....and then even to the merits of advertising on Craigslist. None of which was mentioned in my first post. And after repeated attempts to convey that I am simply ranting, and not looking for a solution as they won't work with my needs....everyone seems to ignore that.

Like I said however, some good did come out of this thread. I learned that there are many more people than I thought that consider texting =email and that's its okay.

What I do find surprising is the number of people who feel it's still okay to call at midnight, simply because I am offering a service

Its not that simple for me, as I have said in numerous previous posts.

I think some of it stems from the difference between those of us who have to earn our income by our services or products vs those who get a paycheck whether or not they earn it. My BIL, a 9to5 government worker all his life, is able to disconnect and be a couch potato. Shuts his work phone off at 5 PM. I don't have that freedom nor do I want to be a couch potato.

No offense to the many hard working government workers. My BIL just isn't one of you.

99% of people I do business for on craigslist are great people to deal with. Ditching c-list as an advertising means and relying solely on a paper ad does not make one immune to the bad apples. Craigslist must vary a lot by region, but around here, if you are a small business selling goods or services, and you are not on facebook and craigslist....you are missing a TON of business.

You may be missing a ton of business, but you're only missing a certain segment of your market, and you have to ask yourself if that business is worth getting.

I use craigslist only for people who are selling a product that I'm looking for, as we have also sold items via craigslist. Personally, I would never use craigslist to hire a "professional" service other than lawn care, which I do myself.

BINGO!

Back in the 90's, was working at the office late, couldn't figure out who would call the office at 10pm and I picked up the phone just to see who would be so stupid to call so late. Turns out it was a purchasing agent looking for something due to an emergency on his end. He fell over dead when I picked up, and I had the product to him the next morning, and it was a 5 figure sale. I wasn't in sales at the time, but I learned from that point that you may get a lot of stupid calls during "off hours", but there is that one nugget of gold you may find if you do answer your phone. I'v also had guys call me on weekends on a regular basis, but never buy anything. After a while, I let them know that if they want to take my time up, if they don't want to buy but are only looking for information, they can call me during business hours instead of my time off if they don't want to buy after numerous phone calls from them.

Either you want the business or you don't.

If you advertise a business for the general population to call, you can expect calls at all hours.

This is why you have a business line and a personal line:D

I resemble that remark. I worked for an Army lab for 37 years plus. From about 1993 on I worked on a small (about 8 person) team that supported the Topographic units in the Field Army directly. We were officially on call for 8 hours a day but in reality that 8 hours a day was 25/7. I'd get a call at 2 a.m. being told I needed to be in someplace far away in 24 hours if not immediately. Some of the single team members would be on travel for months on end.

But I never envied the "9 to 5'ers". They had to pay to see the world.

I get the same thing from some of my students. They will email me at 9 o'clock on a Friday night, asking for something. If I am in a good mood, I will respond back, but always preface my email with "I don't normally work on weekends", but...."

And if I don't respond until Monday, and Sunday night they're emailing me again asking me if I got the earlier email, then they really hear it from me. Actually, this happens quite rarely, but I really need to explain etiquette to them if it does happen.
