Re: looking at older tractor

So to budget, where to look for stuff like brakes/linings maybe rings, head gasket, clutch kits etc that type of stuff?

I assume that seals would be standard and i can match them by type,OD,ID and width

I know steering box needs resealed at min. Before paint

I hope to check it out again on Friday,
Thanks

Re: looking at older tractor

How to identify if engine is gas or kerosene version?

on the ETA I assume the kerosene would not have spark plugs etc, like a diesel?

I assume 6v since it has an 8v battery, 1st time I looked and counted 4 cells, I was like :confused2:

I will go look at it tomorrow

If it needs the parts you listed, I would pass on the purchase. There are still many Super A's in Ky and Tn that are ready to work in the under $1500 price range. Of course, if you are mechanically inclined and are looking for a project tractor, one needing lots of repairs should be bought for $400-$500. Ken Sweet

Re: looking at older tractor

It runs good now, just looking for something for over the winter to get ready with the wife for spring planting (just curious what is available for down the road)

I will get it on stands and point to certain things and let her play (she has full tool set, she has been a "hands on" service manager for years) difficult things she asks me about, anything else she grabs her airgun and goes to town :D

She is learning to weld so WE can build a small 4 wheeled wagon for her to pull around

I would like to surprise her next spring and trailer it and the wagon to town at 6am so she can finish the ride to the farmers market with it (1 mile or so), and she can sell off the wagon (event organizers love the idea)

plan would be to service it (brakes, clutch, coolant system, electrical), tape it up, sand blast and fresh paint then all rubber hoses and decals

makes sure it is reliable so she can run it and use it's cultivators to keep the potato rows weed free and loose

ETA and as for price...it is very, very reasonable and we can drive it home to boot...for a 3rd of what they go for, so $1,000 of parts/paint and it will still be less than a normal priced ugly duckling on CL

front tires are new, rear have tread and hold air...but typical dry rot

steering has play at box (thrust washers?) or I noticed it had the older bolt/clamp pitman arm on it, so it could be splines will look closer this weekend, with weight on front tie rods and drag link feel good

left brake doesn't work and it makes noise ?????

right brake works great and quiet

gas, starts good has oil pressure, no meter will check charge this weekend

gas tank inside looks clean, carb needs to be gone through just to clean, and fuel filter/water seperator needs cleaning

radiator looks good, no corrosion and clean fluid

no smoke while running and "sounds" good

hydraulics work, handles are stiff and need cleaning/lube

rust issue with seat and battery box and needs new cables

grill/front sheet metal is dented, gas tank and fenders looked clean

it has wheel weights and comes with:

Super A sickle mower
hay rake
a corn planter

(they all need tlc to use I am sure, parts move just rusty) he has no idea if or how they work, I drove tractor into his shop so we can check it out this weekend and wife can drive her "anniversary present"

sorry so long

Re: looking at older tractor

Looks like lots of fun. Impressed that your wife can drive it as well. My wife is better suited for hydrostatic than gear.

That's going to to make a really nice setup for what you are doing. I look forward to seeing how OCD you are in the restoration.

Re: looking at older tractor

We will find out tomorrow if she can drive it

Should be okay since she can drive a 3 on the tree and a 4/5speed offroad ;)
