Oh heck yes they are better than a 4-way stop and better than a traffic light, too. And it reduces the number of head-on accidents, and lowers injury rates as the cars usually collide while going in somewhat the same directions VS coming directly at each other or 90 degree T-bones. We have two roundabouts near us. There's probably a dozen in the county and more coming. The only problem we have so far is that pretty much EVERY sign in or near the roundabouts have been hit. The bricks are usually messed up, too, from cars hitting them. The trees they planted in the middle have all been topped by cars jumping over the roundabouts. Yes, I said jumping over the roundabouts. As one witness described the accident, "It looked like the Duke's of Hazard." It would be funny, but the driver was killed.
For some reason, roundabouts are much safer in pretty much every location in the world except South Bend, Indiana, where the accident rates have increased, almost doubling, since their installation. Officials are blaming old people and the learning curve.
