I remember the beginnings of big box hardware stores around here. Don't know if it was a regional/local thing but first was 'Eagle Hardware'. I was in love. A one stop for building/remodeling, repair, etc. It later changed to Lowe's and the quality dropped some. Home Depot came on the scene. I still love going to traditional lumber yards and do so for harder to find lumber. Hard to justify when the price for standard stuff is significantly more.

Forgot to mention one of the things I like about menards.....lumber selection.

HD and Lowes stop at 16' (probably has something to do with them storing it inside the store?)

Menards normally stocks lots of stuff in the 20-24' range.

Wish we had a Menards! I also wish we had an Agri Supply closer but I do have one of those 75 miles away.

I usually choose Lowes over HD. I believe the price and quality is a little better on wood.

Was recently introduced to an independent lumber supply in the neighboring county that has a True Value franchise. I was impressed with their stock and plan to try and remember them in the future. I live near the county line so they are as close as the 2 box stores to me.

Menards, hands down! What's not to like about a store where you can buy lumber, clothing and groceries. They carry a brand of soda called "Sprecher's" which is apparently a microbrewery in WI. One of our local carryouts also carries Sprecher's beer.

The 11% sales are great - as long as I keep a careful watch on where I put my receipts and remember to mail them in!

Prices are generally a lot lower than Lowes / HD. When I did a project in my basement, I needed 4x8 panels of rigid insulation. The panels were about $6 each cheaper at Menards than HD.

I will say that the service level at our local Menard's has declined since they opened. For the first year or so, every associate would ask if they could help you find something as you walked through the aisles. Now it seems a lot of them have mastered the art of eye-aversion as they walk the store.

I also wish that Menards would give you the option of emailing your receipts to you. HD does this (tied to your CC number). I generally don't like "Loyalty Cards", but if Menards had one that you could scan and they'd email your receipts to you, I'd sign up. I asked about this last week at Menards and was told that they could do that if you bought using your Menards charge card. I really don't need/want another credit card.

My other complaint about Menards is their hand-dryers in the men's room. They have the ones that only put out a light breeze and provide no paper towels as an alternative! If they're not going to have paper towels, the least they could do is install those "jet dryers". LOL!

To reply to the original question - None of them. These places are a time warp where you can walk on and on with no one asking if they can help you.

You are correct about the darn hand dryers at Menards. Very lacking.

Never been in a bathroom at any store that I can remember. I'm only 68 and don't have ' problems ' .... I have a designated P tree next to my pole barn, though.... :)

Quite the opposite at my HD. I often have to preemptively wave and say no thanks.
