2002 Ford 350 5.4L dually dump towing

Interesting to me that same frame, same springs, same axles, same brakes, same tires, and change either the engine or transmission changes the weight a vehicle can haul or pull safely.

My common sense tells me it has NOTHING to do with safety & everything to do with performance.

If I'm loaded heavy, I am usually not in a big hurry anyway.

That motor has been around for a long time. If you are not going to be pulling 10K behind it everyday, it will be fine. The ones with the 3.73 rears are designed for the landscaper guys who pull 5-7k mower trailers around all the time and they do fine with that.

Being able to safely pull out and merge with traffic or pull uphill with out slowing down too much are important as well, being too slow can be unsafe

Ever notice that states require slower speeds for overweight loads?

I don't know if this helps any..... 2016 Ram 3500 with a 6.4L gas engine and 4:10 gears. Pulls it pretty good and sucks gas while doing so. :(

Nice looking set up! You have an extra liter of displacement (6.4 vs 5.4), and lower gears, plus I think my motor is single overhead cam, the newer motors may have DOHC. Is that an 18 foot trailer? Boomer 35 / 40 tractor?

I think both - consider if it has 4.10 gears vs 3.73, you would get more engine braking power I would think. I'm with you, slow and steady with a heavy load.

It is a 24 foot trailer and a Boomer 45 tractor. Tractor with loaded tires and backhoe weighs about 7000 lbs.

i drove a f250 of that vintage w/the 5.4, but a 5spd, 2wd for a large equipment rental yard. i towed 12k loads with it daily. it did fine and never felt unsafe or underpowered. the local new holland dealership has a fleet of 5.4 powered trucks they pull goosenecks with delivering some fairly large machinery
