Some of you may remember a while back when o asked about my JD25A. It's old, it's beat to snot, but it needs a roller bearing, and 5 knives were contacting the leading edge of the mower. I tried the heat/beat method, I tried bending, I ended up just using my plasma cutter to remove the offending section. I'll weld a patch back in next summer.

I replaced the 5 shattered knives, pumped it all full of grease per Leon's recommendations (5-7 pumps) which was just enough to squeeze out the old grease.

I've had all sorts of other vehicle problems and other things taking priority, but I finally hauled it to my house last night, unloaded and hooked it up today. Had to tweak it a bit, and found out quickly that I should have raised the cutting height to the max (d'oh!!!) and also learned that the governor on my Massey Utility 35 needs serious adjustment!

Well, I've got to say, as beat as these old beasts are, (tractor is a gasser, mower is old too!) I'm IMPRESSED! It leaves a trail of shredded brush behind, sounds like a huge vacuum cleaner, and DEMOLOSHED a small pile of 1/2"-3/4" vines I had laid in the field over the summer. (I cut them out of the trees in my yard).

I'm officially a HUGE fan of flail mowers. This thing is awesome! I posted a pic from my phone through the app, so don't hate me if its enormous or something. Got done when it was dark out, so the pic is probably terrible.

The area in front of the tractor was all 4 feet high!

Don't you love it when a plan comes together shaeff?

I am glad the night maneuvers went as planned.
Now you can keep it low until frost and seed with good grass
seed by November and have many fewer weeds come May 1st.

I hope you have room to work on the flail mower this winter if
time allows-oh, and change both flange bearings for the flail
mower rotor not just the bad one as the old bad one stressed
that one as well.

Happy mowing until late Fall and Happy Halloween.

I certainly do! The grass growth here has slowed significantly, though I expect a quick jump with this 80* weather we've had for the past few days. I do have room to work on it this winter, unfortunately that room is outside! Either way, the rotor bearings are still good, the roller bearing on one side is bad. I'll replace both, I found part numbers for less expensive alternatives.

Thanks! And here is a picture from this morning:

I must say, what a difference new belts make. I took off two worn belts and installed 3 new belts. For the most part, it ran like a champ. Before if you got into some thicker (more dense grass) the belts liked to slip and smoke. This rarely happens now but on the occasional sand hill. I am sure I can tighten it up a bit for an even better job. My NH918H 93'' now just needs a rear roller bar and I think it will be yet improved again. I am just trying not to buy one new with brackets. eeeek .. the price is a bit high. Back in the swing of things feels so good. Now I need to start fixing some of my other broken implements. It's going to be a busy winter.

I ran the JD 390 around and knocked down all the tall weeds/grass on about 8 acres today,,,
then I gave the 390 a bath before I parked it for the winter,

It still looks pretty good for being over 10 years old,, and original paint,,,

I was amazed the cutters still have paint on them,, they have mowed more than a couple hundred acres.

This is the smoothest running mower I have ever operated,,,
I have run at least six other flails (all larger than the 390) and at least six bush hogs.

In the vein of Flails for pasture, I have around 75ac that will be needing mowing next summer. I was merely going to get a batwing, since here in Northern KY, that is what everyone is using for horse pastures. But I began thinking about a flail mower. Since I am NOT going to spend all day mowing... I want something with at least a 15ft width. I have a 100hp JD 5100e which should have the required power for at least a 15-20ft mower for using in this regard. (Im not brush hogging things... just mowing pastures.)

I am spending my time, insuring the smoothness of the pastures is as good as possible. They are already soybean fields, so they are pretty good. But I am smoothing them even more with my new dirt equipment.

About the biggest flail mower I have seen is 84-96". This just won't cut it for a pasture mower, at least not this much. But... I have seen 'row crop shredders' which are long enough... but I suspect they are quite a bit different than a 'flail grass mower'. I wouldn't have a problem changing out blades. Does anyone know what that difference really is and could I realistically 'alter' one of these tow-behind flails to work as a good quality mowing machine? I'm skeptical, because I suspect if they were that good, someone in the farms around me would be using one. But they are all stuck on rotary cutters. I know some require bigger HP than my tractor, but I suspect if it is a reasonable thought, I can find one which would be suitable. I'm looking to get something used... but the following site has an explanation of what I am basically talking about.
