Gear or Hydrostatic Transmissions for Compact Utility Tractors?

As the HST gets even more complicated (because they can) with electronics and bells and whistles it only makes the case for the manual transmission more attractive. Less expensive, is way more simple to repair (HST might even be repairable without dealer help and special tools and sophisticated hydraulic measuring tools and meters), DT is easily straight forward mechanical repair, expectations of fewer problems. You put it in gear it moves. HS

The better geared transmissions have electronics. I've never heard of someone breaking either transmissions. A clutch is far more likely to give trouble. Although a HST has a clutch it's not used.

I agree the simple gear transmissions are easy to repair and are bullet proof for the most part. Hydrostatic transmissions seem to be bullet proof too and have fewer parts than the direction reverser transmissions. I have followed the TBN threads for several years and from what I gather none of the transmission types have many problems. All seem pretty bullet proof.

Electronic add ons and features/options, while some are handy to have the more of them you have the possibility of failures does go up. This is true of all tractors with options and features whether hydro, gear or IVT.

Were there even HST's when my tractor was built? (1981)

Including the new tires, and mower (the mower was purchased new) I have about $12K in my gear shift tractor.

I can not even imagine what a 60HP HST tractor, and that mower cost today,,,

My old gear drive has served me well for 20 years,,, the mower for 10 years,,,
I think I will keep them!! :thumbsup:

Every commercial front end loader and backhoe I've ever run were torque converter power reversers.

That's what my Case has, and it's a really nice system. It's not quite as easy to use as an HST setup, but close in most situations.

As I've mentioned in another thread, when you make a mistake (foot slips, etc) with an HST machine, either nothing happens, or it stops moving. When you make a mistake with most any other kind of setup the machine keeps moving and something winds up broken or dented. Unfortunately, other than my wife and my mother, I don't know anybody who's perfect, and we all make mistakes.

International Harvester built the model 100 Hydro in 1973-76, the model 186 Hydro after this followed by the 3488 I think. So yes hydro transmissions were available when your tractor was built.
