Gear or Hydrostatic Transmissions for Compact Utility Tractors?

Overheating.

How would you overheat it?
Plug the transmission cooler and ignore the overheating warnings?
That would probably plug the radiator, too, and that would overheat the engine on both a gear and HST, wouldn't it?

Did anyone already cover the fact that compared to a gear tractor, an HST tractor of the same size and capability with the required larger engine so that it does not feel like a dog cost a bunch more money!!! That has got to be the single biggest reason to have a gear CUT. I know it's my reason.

I really think there are 2 main reasons that gear users say a gear is better.

1) they have a gear and need to say it's better to justify their expense. That's a reason many people rave about many things they purchase.

2) Testosterone. You can't be a real man unless you shift gears in your tractor, truck or car. Shifting gives you a feeling of power and control.

I found this answer to be hilarious, really dumb but hilarious... lol

I own both, but if I could only have one, it would be gear...

1. you have to be kidding!! Hydros cost more to buy, and also cost more to own too...

2. that may have fit you, but it has NOTHING to do why "I" prefer gear drive. I've stated several reasons why I prefer gear drive in earlier post, so I won't repeat them AGAIN here...

Quite likely.

You cherry picked out the part of his quote where he said....

If you're happy with your 'system' then that's good and it's all that matters.

They aren't way off base at all. Sounds like he touched a nerve... there's a whole bunch of good reading out there by a couple fellas named Erikson and Freud that might explain it better than he can.

#2 is a completely subjective guess and not worth talking about. But I'm interested in how you can support that #1 is correct in any way?

When it comes to the money, and many HST fans hate when I bring this up and say it's an unfair comparison, but you can buy a next frame size up gear CUT with a larger engine and larger loader and larger everything for the size of a smaller HST. And that larger gear tractor can out work the smaller tractor doing just about everything most people do with a tractor. Yes, there are a few exceptions. But dollar for dollar gear kills HST.
