Disc Harrow Appropriate disc size/type for 32HP tractor?

Heavy western PA soil probably ain't too different then heavy central OH soil. I have got an acre and a half of plowed ground, but don't want to touch it til spring. But if it pulls okay in unplowed ground, I can always take some pressure off with the wheels if on plowed ground.

Have you ever pulled it with that ford 3910? Bout the same HP, and ~500# heavier bare tractor and larger front tires. My MX would be heavier with the FEL on, (loaded rears also) but not ideal weight distribution with the loader on though. How many pans and what diameter? If your 3910 handles it.....it gives me some hope.

This is a JD 210 (not the actual one I am considering, but same model/size)

That is considerably more disc than mine. Cone blades move much more dirt and pull harder. Not sure how many blades I have or their size.

I can pull my disc easily in 2wd.

Learn something new every day. Didn't know there was such a thing as a cone type disc. But can see it in the picture now. Don't know if all jd 210's are like that. That just a pic from the web. I may try to get some pics of it today.

I've been reading through various old posts on this forum, trying to figure out what disc harrow my tractor can handle. My experience is limited to larger tractors and transport disks for food plots. Now that I have a smaller property, I have downsized tractors to a 32HP Kubota L2900. The tractor weights 2,700 pounds +/- and in addition has a FEL and rear tires loaded with foam.

I originally planned to get another (much smaller) transport disc, but I can't seem to find much (looking used) in the 5-6' range. I'm thinking that a 3 point might be the way to go, since to get to my food plot I have to drive through a 3/8 mile long, 8' wide winding path. However, there seem to be a lot of mixed reviews on whether or not a 3 point disk works well. Am I wasting my time if I go this route? If not, do you think my tractor could handle a 6' double gang disk or would 5' be more appropriate?

Widening my path is also an option, if anyone thinks my tractor could handle a pull type disk that is 7' wide (narrowest I can find) - but I have my doubts about my tractor handling that.

Also, I am not considering rototillers - soil is much to rocky in my corner of PA.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Any chance disks can be removed to get it narrow enough to pull?

That's a nice disc LD. Similar to our 13' Taylor Way. We pulled it with a D17 and 185 Allis with loaded rears. The discs were pretty well worn. I think you will be OK. The R4's might tend to spin out a little but you've got front wheel assist.

I've got r1's, not r4's.

Looked at the disc today. It's not cone blades like the pic I found online show.

Still don't know the pan diameter, was out fixing field tile when I was passing by to take a look, and didn't have a tape measure on me.

I think it'll be great. Cone blades tend to "plow". You'll be better served with standard blades.

HEre are some shots.....best I got. My guess is 18" pans. Spacing is 9.5" and there are 8 per axle. So a total of 32 pans....one is broken. Amazing how much the weeds grow, this disc was just parked here in the spring :confused2:

So being 9.5" spacing, may be of benefit as opposed to a 7.5" pan spacing for a 13' disc. Less cutters in the ground.

Not sure what its worth. He keeps telling me to make an offer. It needs some bearings according to him.....one outside pan on the rear gang is broke, and no hoses. I have seen a couple of 210 discs on c-list in the 1500-2000 range field ready. Thats way out of my price range, as I see ~12' transport discs of other colors (red) that are "field ready" in the 500-800 range. So Im thinking $500 tops for this disc.

My bad on the R1's LD. It's gonna take some time and money to get field ready. If it was mine and I wanted to move it $500 is more than fair especially without cylinder and hoses.

In my neighborhood prices are generally soft for old equipment. Problem is finding them. Most salvaged.

That disc would probably salvage for $125. It appears to be straight. Can't see any welds or major repairs. The bearings are generally cheap and relatively easy to replace although it requires disassembling the gang. The broken disc wouldn't worry me at all. Curious why the cylinder is there but the hoses have been robbed since Spring?? Maybe owner has given up on using it? So, I'd expect worse case scenario and assume the cylinder is bad?

So, for me, if it was the disc I was looking for, I'd offer $350, and would probably give $500 if I had to. I'd be hesitant to go much higher. Plan on spending $400-$500 getting it in tip-top shape.
