Coyotes getting worrisome

If it is better that you don't hit them, then I am doing it precisely right. I have managed to hit only about four out of the 20 or so shots I have taken at them. Granted that they are wary and usually some distance away, but I have missed some good shots as well. Glad to see I am smartening them up. LOL

And they get even warier when you start slinging lead their way..:)

Trust me, there is no better deterrent that having dead rotting comrades reminding them of why you are dangerous. Otherwise you are just making noise and when noise is not associated with death or danger you will quickly be disregarded. For this exact reason, I prefer to leave the animals on the edge of the field, preferably in the path that they will commonly take. This tactic worked just as well with baboons in africa as it does with coyotes in the US.

Hey, you leave a couple human bodies in your driveway and I won't come on in!!!!! :D

Lol. Actually a long history of people doing just that. Vlad the Impaler comes to mind.

The deterrent doesn't last very long. Dead Coyotes only last a couple days, it that, around here. The vultures find them and strip them to bones. Coyotes think the bones are just another hard-luck dog that crawled from the road. Had a steer die in the field last year. It turned to bones in three days so I know a Coyote wouldn't last that long. We also have Cougar here so the food chain goes pretty high. That's the reason I don't go out back or to the barn after dark unless I'm packing some armament. Heck, I've had a pair of Coyotes within 20' of the back door. They're smart but not that smart. :)

Under Texas law, they're fair game.

A hunting license is not required to hunt the following:
•Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals or fowl.
•Depredating feral hogs, if a landowner (resident or non-resident) or landowner's agent or lessee is taking feral hogs causing depredation on the landowner's land.
•Fur-bearing animals, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license or if the fur-bearing animals are causing depredation.

The noisy pack hadn't been heard in a few days. We did a little recreational shooting yesterday evening. Just after dark the noisy pack was back just a hundred yards or so off to the east of the house. So evidently having gunfire around doesn't faze them too much. But I fired a .22mag in their general direction and didn't hear them any more after that. Figured out a good way to do an audio recording on the phone, so when they return, I'll try to get one.

We did find a half-eaten deer carcass about 1/2 mile to the west, but that was right beside the main road, so was likely a road-kill that the 'yotes just capitalized on.

I was thinking about this thread on Friday night when the coyotes started yapping. I was a couple miles in the backcountry sitting under a tarp shelter wondering what the reaction would be of those on this thread if they were sitting there with me. LOL. I bet it would be priceless.

A couple of shots with the 9mm pistol usually quiets them down for the evening, perhaps a couple of nights, not much for long term. My brother liked to chase them around with his mini14 a number of years ago.. he would shoot behind it for a couple shots, then in front to turn it.. back and forth across a distant field. When he finished, the coyote was often standing there panting, too tired to care. He killed a bunch the years before, but could not handle the stench of the hides any longer... He said it was the most foul smelling animal. The pelts were not even paying for the ammo, so enough of that..

Used to like hearing them at night when backpacking in Maine wilderness. I admit I was surprised to hear them here in Jersey at night a few years back. Wolf howls however give me the chills. A neighbor adjoining the hunting property we used to own in north central Pa was a dog/wolf hybrid breeder. The racket those things made at night would sure get a reaction.

I agree on the wolf howls. Cold blooded killers. I had an encounter up in Montana a few years ago on a spring bear hunt. It walked past at about 75 yards and the hair on my arms stood up. Those son of a guns are big.
