Coyotes getting worrisome

A number of years ago, some acreage owners dogs started to pack up and harass and kill livestock-it was spring and therefore calving time. Far worse than any coyote concerns any of the farmers had ever seen. After nothing was done, it kind of became "open season" on any canine creatures-barring the immediate neighbor's dogs if they were alone, but most kept theirs tied up at home.

The difference between coyote packs and dog packs is coyotes kill to defend or eat, dogs kill for entertainment.

We have always had coyotes near. Seems like mostly spring and fall. I suspect they are up in the mountains in summer and move to lower ground for winter but I could be wrong. I'm quite used to hearing them and then my dogs barking back at them. One night I'd swear I heard a full out wolf howl right outside the house. I sat bolt upright in bed and didn't hear it anymore. I seriously doubt it was a wolf. I'm almost certain there are no wolves here. But I've often wondered if it was a coyote or a local dog which I never heard before or since.

We used to freak out the cottage neighbours when I would sit out on the deck and howl until my Airedale Terrier joined in, so that now there was two of us. (He was better at it than I was, but it took a while to get him going). The next day all the talk on the bay was about the wolf howls the night before!😜

There's lots of ruburbanites (urban folks living in the country) in my area who tend to similarly mistake identity of animal calls. While at a party in a neighbors house, myself and one other old local were the lone voices insisting that recent horrible sounds at night were not from a cougar or fisher cat, but from foxes. No population of Fishers or Cougars around here for centuries. One of the kids searched audio for fox calls and cranked up the volume oh his laptop. The sounds of vindication.

Wouldn't have helped them "out' our little fake Wolfe howl trick - we are that good! And wouldn't want to spoil the cottagers' excitement anyway. We are quite close to Algonquin Park in Ontario, which has lots of Wolves, and they are considered part of the attraction to this area. (The locals do hear them howling on occasion.)
