Nosler 140g Ballistic Tip is a good all-around pill for non-magnum 7mms and I reload or shoot them factory-loaded in .7mm08, 7mmx57, and .280 Rem. BC is close enough to .500 and SD close enough to .250 for me, and proven to 400 yds on my last 'Yummalope'. They're cheap and accurate, but ... wait for a clear broadside shot on deer vs quartering in/away if up close (<50 yd), as the potential for meat damage could make one think they were a bit over-gunned. (BTDT)

btw, I have more rifles (lots of 'old-mils') than deer I expect to shoot, and I like the idea of taking a freezer-load with each if possible. For the record, my choice of arm to hunt with often begins like a web search with "lowest price first". If I could find/mod-to a 5rd mag for it I'd take the SMLE No 4 Mk 1 to deer camp. (cost <$100) I'm never out to win the buck pole pool, always proud to prove a 'cheap' gun that others thought wouldn't do the job.

The one deer I shot with an old Mk 4 SMLE in .303 Brit, died really quickly. I had $100 total in the rifle.

Those old .303 would hit hard and be a great deer rifle.

Great cartridge but rifles are extremely heavy for the caliber. If you don't mind toting all that weight, it is a great deer rifle and CHEAP. The old British Enfield rifles get a little lighter if sporterized by removing most of the wood above and below the barrel.
As far as investments go, most cheap guns remain cheap years later. A good quality brand name gun almost always appreciates in value above the inflation rate.

You are right on both points. I had a .303 in college and it was a shorter barrel with a upside down looking funnel "flash suppressor", and steel butt plate. Kicked like a Mule but was decently accurate. Sold it years later for a few dollars more than I paid for it.

A proven work horse. Not quite as powerful as the 30-06, but anyone who reloads can make it do anything you want. I have one, and I love it. Butt ugly, but a winner by any standard.

Mark 5. Sometimes called a "jungle carbine".

Yes - Sir, now that you mention it, that was the name! Couldn't recall it for some reason.
Neat rifle - sort of wish I hung on to that one.....

How much did you get out of it? Should be around $600 now.. They are generally more desirable to collectors than a Mark 4. They made a lot less of them.

This was back in the early 90's, paid 135 and sold for $200 around 96 - (stock was cut down so that may have hurt the price) but was a pretty decent shooter.

Good to know, we can shoot coyotes here 365 days per year; let's hope I can give my RA a workout!

BTW: which 7mm-08?

Thanks,

Not sure, guy bought it for his son, scope & all, synthetic stock, it's not a "brand" name, darn good shooter, only gave $200 for it with box/half of bullet's.
