Buying Advice Bought 100 Acres. Upgrade my tractor or hire some work done?

If I was in your shoes I would hire it done. But I am 57 and need a hip and knee replaced. I am actually good for two tanks of gas running a chainsaw before my hip says STOP. Your most cost effective way is to use a chainsaw. I guess it comes down to how much do you value your time.

Man you guys like to spend money!!! Wish you were my neighbors. I'd gladly open ATV trails for $100 per hour. Actually I'd be a good Grandpa and let my Grandsons jave the jobs. I could serve as overseer!!! :) :)

wow --- all these comments. i still cannot get over the MUST HAVE IT NOW mentality. its 100 acres . clearing a nice trail is an invitation to trespassers. I dont even know how much you can do to drag deer. who knows you might be lucky with deer close to a path . how much can you clear a year via the slow going way? is this acceptable to you or you must have a clear trail all the way around NOW?
Having a nice set of acreage for hunting , I'd would be putting in sweat equity. you never know -- while working the land you probably will change the path, or plans. if you hired it out - the person doing the work will have to have a plan and most likely wont change for the better.

sorry -- im just a bit old fashioned here ...

Great replies all around... my first thought was DIY... but that is my nature. Second thought... you are 33... okay definitely DIY unless you really don't have time on your hands and wouldn't enjoy it and are not open to explore. Third thought... creating a convenient hunting zone on your own property??? ... okay you are the type that would hire it done. Bottom line... what do you want to do to enjoy life? 100 acres? I'm enjoying already. I will surmise when you put another 20 years on your belt you will appreciate more the journey than the destination.

Every day is a journey on my farm. I hired a large Excavator to dredge a small pond this Fall. First thing I've hired done there. Didn't get much satisfaction out of watching him do that......

I hear ya Larry. I totally have sympathy for a land owner that has to hire work done for whatever reason. I'm Blessed to not be in that position, yet..... :)

But here we are talking about a self acclaimed 33 year old in good health. Jeez, crank up the chainsaw and have at it. Will be good for the Soul!!!! :)

As to the rechargeable sawzall,,,,, really??? Can it be done?? Yes.. Is it efficient and timely?? No.. :confused3:

I grew up clearing land with ax, Kaiser Blade and cross cut saw powered by my brother and can identify with your points. Not speaking of the OP or anyone in particular, but I know thirty-three year olds I'd feel uncomfortable using an electric shaver.

And back to an earlier post, I worked in the woods most of my life, but I've run into some logged land I wouldn't touch. Quite a few years ago, my brother and I grabbed our assortment of chain saws, went to some acreage to clear trails, walked a bit of it and loaded back up. We called someone in with equipment then later went back with our saws.

Yep I agree. In this case, I don't think the step I highlighted above has been tried yet. :)

Pictures of what the OP is up against would help this thread.

Yep, I brought that up in #7, hard to speculate without a better idea.

Alright gentleman, I need some advice. I just purchased 100 acres earlier this fall. It is mostly woods that has been select cut approximately 6 or 7 years ago. My biggest challenge now is that I would like to do some work on the land. My first priority would be getting some ATV trails cut throughout the property. I use the property for hunting, but would like to expand the use to ATV riding and hiking. As it stands now, I can't access the farthest half of the property to hunt because I can't get there unless by foot. So dragging a deer back to an area where I can access it by ATV would be a LONG drag. So I would at least like a trail to ring around the entire perimeter of the property as well as some trails that cut through the property is several places.

The woods are not very steep, more like gently rolling hills. I have tried using my brush hog, but trees that are about as big around as my ankle are too big to mow and I would eventually get to a point where I couldn't go any further due to the trees being slightly too big to mow. So I abandoned that idea. My next idea was just to take my ATV and a chain saw and start cutting myself a trail, but I expect that to be slow going. I started looking through Craiglist for some land clearing ads and found a guy that actually advertised cutting ATV trails. I has a heavy duty Catepillar skid steer with steel tracks, a grapple, and a Marshall Tree Saw. I watched a YouTube video of the Marshall saw and DANG that thing is legit. I emailed the guy and he said that his setup is IDEAL for cutting ATV trails with the Marshall tree saw. His rate is $100/hour.

Which got me thinking. Would I be better served by just hiring this job out or would I better off if I invested in the equipment so that I could do it myself and not have to worry about how long the job was taking and I could do a lot more for myself. Since the Marshall Tree Saw is a skid steer implement, I could likely upgrade my tractor to a skid steer quick attach version and get a Marshall saw and use it on a tractor instead of a skid steer. My current tractor is a 23hp LS J2023 that I also use around my house which is on 6 acres. I use it to pull a 72" finish mower to mow about 3 acres which is in the woods part of my house. It's too rough in the woods for me to use my zero turn mower. My tractor only has 160 hours so it's still practically new. But for $100/hour, I"m sure I could keep the guy busy for at least a whole weekend, maybe even more, just making a few trails. I'm going to call the guy later today and asks about how long it would take to cut a trail. My northern border is 1100 yards long, a little over 1/2 mile. So I'm just trying to see what would be the better option. Any advice would be appreciated.

Check this guy out. I would consider this route.

Bull Hog Skid Steer Mulching Attachment - Fecon

I wouldn't have a skidsteer with the Marshall cutter do mine. It seems slow.

I have seen these forestry mulchers work and they can really plow through the crap, and fast.

I'm all about doing yourself but only a chainsaw is getting a little hardcore for me. You'll get a lot more done by getting a nice brush cutter like a fs460. I know they're twice the doe of a nice chainsaw but they will get more than twice the work done while standing upright.
