Richard, lets try this. You know that if you bend a piece of steel bar it can be bent past the point of just bending, it can bend to the point of staying bent.
If you bend glass, it can bend, but it will always spring back to its original shape, AND you cannot bend it past the point of bending and have it stay bent. At least not without heating it. If you try to bend the glass beyond the point of bending, it fails catastrophically. Obviously some glass can bend way more than others. Did that help any, or just muddy the waters.

He may have difficulty being able to tell where the hole for the hitch pin is.

... and what James said. Wasn't it in a thread about steel vs wood beams over a three car garage??? IIRC, it was discussed that hardness only affects the amount of elastic deformation before plastic deformation or breakage occurs.

I thought for several pages that 4140 PHT would be my choice to DIY a new bar. (Common for AR barrels, transmission shafts, hardenable) Don't recall the OP's dimensions, so I guessed when shopping. 1 1/4" x 2/1/2" x 24" 4140, around $1.60-some/inch, so ~$40 and a fetch or ship if the size is close.

btw, am I the only one who suspects that the hole surrounding the break is a 'safety' feature to spare breaking the housing? Swinging drawbars I recall have a pin that drops alongside the bar, not thru it ....

Ha, ha Richard... I am not disagreeing with you... yes, glass can bend before it breaks. Very evident if your aspect ratio is relatively high (height/width) which drives stiffness and your beam length is long enough to observe. I guess I am feeling sorry about now for the OP. He just wanted to fix his dang drawbar. :laughing: Some of us love to learn regardless of the tangent the subject/thread might take and enjoy the extraneous discussion. :drink:
