So I'm thinking of traking a gun to a gunshow that I bought new and selling it. If I don't sell it at a gunshow I may sell it on in a classified add. So gunshow isn't the crux of the question.

If I sell that gun without any paper trail and someone uses it to commit a crime and they trace it back to me because I registered it when buying it new... will I have to be proving the sale and or answering questions about where I was at the time the gun was used in a crime?

Search on Bing for a firearm receipt. You and the party buying can fill it out and if something were to happen to it or with it you would be free or you could go to a gun store and transfer it for a fee. If it's in your name then you are responsible for it, if that makes sense.

For a little less money and no worries, trade it in to a dealer for something you can use--gun, accessory, boots, ammunition, jacket, credit, etc.

If you have a Cabela's nearby, they were buying for 70% of what they would sell it for, when I checked last. Payment in cash or credit.

Check with your local sporting goods store about rules for selling guns. Each state may be different. Here in NY due to the SAFE ACT law all sales of guns now have to go through a gun dealer. Its a pain in the butt.
I assume you are talking about a handgun.
Here's the way it used to be here.
1) I sell a handgun to someone, they pay me and I give them a receipt showing my permit number and gun make, model, ser. number with their name and permit number.
2) They go to permit issuing agent in their area and have it added to their permit. Agent gives them a transfer receipt to give to me.
3) Buyer comes back to me, gives me the transfer receipt that I keep with my permit and shows me it was added to his permit, then he could take possession of gun.
Its not done like that any more here.
I thought of selling some guns to a dealer like Cabela's or Gander Mountain but they only want to pay about 15-25% of what the gun is worth.

I would try to sell to a registered CPL owner with proof or take a picture of their drivers license with bill of sale.

Good info and things to consider.. some of which I had no idea. Thanks

What is a registered CPL owner? Never mind.. I googled it.. I always call it CCL but same thing.

Just make out a bill of sale with serial # and drivers license # date and sign with two copies.

Why 2 copies you ask? Cause if I was the buyer I would want proof that YOU sold it to me and it was not stolen.

Another option to get true market value is to sell it on gunbroker.com (ebay for guns). All transaction go through an FFL so the gun will no longer be registered to you when the transaction is finished.

In NY state anyway. As stated you have to go through a FFL;the problem with that is NO DEALERS that I know
will do it because of the time and paper-work involved;and they have to keep permanent records.I am talking private sale to private sale.
