Use an FFL to transfer the firearm to the new owner and enjoy peace of mind.
If the sale is between two in state residents, and the buyer has a CC permit which is valid and has no problem with signing a bill of sale and giving you a copy of his permit, a FFL transfer will give you LESS peace of mind in my opinion.
That said, if I'm buying a gun from a known person off a couple of local state gun forums, and they don't care about paperwork, neither do I. I just make a copy of the sale from the forum and store it for my own records.
