oil stained concrete..What to do?

   / oil stained concrete..What to do? #31
After the stains became overwhelming, I emptied the shop/barn, cleaned and etched the floor with muriatic acid and put down a two part solvent based epoxy floor coating from Sherwin Williams. I've done a thread on it. Now, it's a subtle gray and the only harm comes from acetone or rust stains. Can't fix the first item but CLR gets the rust off. Barn floor always looks great no matter what I spill as long as I wipe it up.

I remember that thread. You did a great job. My wife wants me to do that in our garage. It's on my to do list, in a galaxy far far away..... :)

After you do it you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

I also read that thread. I've researched this a LOT, online and visiting two local Auto Repair Shops and two local friends in personal shops.

My findings are this.

1. Preparation is critical. If not diligently and properly done the result is failure.

2. Quality product is critical. If a quality product is not used the result is failure.

I believe sixdogs followed these two rules with results to prove it. :)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING !!

My front entrance to house has a portico covering 2 cars from weather. For a few summers I have used one side to park my Mahindra 4110 and mower out of weather.
NO problem till this year. Last fall, had to split tractor in half to do transmission repair. Now leaks Hytran on concrete, Since the concrete is collared brownish it doesn't look real bad.
But, wife is not real happy. However, my seat has stayed dry all summer. Since folks coming to my house this year, I have strategically parked my Exterra over the oil stains.
I just parked tractor today in garage. Mower cleaned, greased and parked for winter.

Any suggestions how to clean the oil up? It's all Hytran oil. It's crazy, Only had to replace about 1/2 gallon of fluid whole summer season. A little oil spreads a lot.
My concrete was dyed in the concrete truck. Color is all through, not painted. Hasn't been sealed for about 5 yrs. I wonder if oil eats through sealer? Maybe I should have
sealed yearly? Also, had one big stain when gas line was leaking on a visitors car. I never realized gas would do that? Road salt dripping from car causes
damage too.

May you all have a great thanksgiving day. Hoping today will lead to better days ahead for all, right into the New Year!!

Cheers......Coffeeman

Pour mineral spirits onto your driveway and use a stiff bristle push broom to scrub the mineral spirits in. Then wash off with a pressure hose.

Thank me when you see the results when dry.

Yes the gasoline trick I used to bring up the oil was on bare old gray concrete. I don't know what it would do for a colored concrete. It was also outside, with small amounts, I wouldn't do it in a garage.

Had a friend with 3 bay gas station. (In the old days) One nite owner went to his garage and a young high school was cleaning the garages with squeegee and gasoline. Upon entering the smell hit him. It was in late fall and furnace could have kicked on at any time. He shut off furnace and they got outa there fast.
I often wondered if the oil furnace kicking on could have exploded and cause a terrible accident.

I use lacquer thinner. I'm always spilling, dripping or dropping oil and grease in the barn. I pour LT on the spot and let it sit for a minute. Add a little more if it's drying out too fast. While it's still wet, soak it up with paper towels or rags. If it's real cruddy, you can scrub it while it's wet. This works for old spots too.

Mineral spirits are probably a lot less flammable than gasoline, but still.. a KABOOM is possible.
But then again, the KABOOM might solve the problem for you personally at least.

I'll say what I usually say when someone says; "Don't use Q-tips in your ears, you could cause damage". If I'm eating dinner, I'm not going to slit my wrists with a stake knife. It does take a certain amount of brain matter to use a tool. :p

Golly, that's a good quote.
