My wife's pit "Cady" is a pretty good one. When I cast net fish for mullet in the shallow flats she will wait on the shoreline until I catch some, she'll wait until I break their necks to bleed them out and swim out there and round them up bringing them one by one to the Hill.

She is smart well mannered by all accounts. But when the grandkids come over I pen her up not because I don't "like" her. It's because I know from experience that they have the propensity to turn more so than any other breed. No data required.

I commend your responsible care of your animal. Regardless of it's breed. :thumbsup:

The general population of kids in my experience has absolutley NO CLUE on how to approach a dog they don't know.

We use to do rescue work and did "adoption fairs" at pet stores. The amount of kids that would go running up to a strange dog and stick their face into the dogs face was unbelievable IMO (particularly with small kids who would be the same height as a larger dog).

Kicker was, the kids parents would say NOTHING to their kids on correcting them.

My wife starting getting mad at me when I would reprimand the kids AND the parents on how to approach a dog you don't know LOL

Gotta agree with you there, Sig. Lots of dumb parents out there..........kinda like the jerk walking thru a busy parking lot with his child tagging 20 feet behind. But I don't think my parents ever gave me a lesson on dog manners/behavior. ...never got one on human sex either for that matter.....just sayin'.

I sincerely believe that when we were kids, the same amount of dog bites occurred, it just didn't get the press. Back when I was a kid, never heard of a pit bull, it was the doberman's if any who made the news.

Kind of like gun shootings.

However, there is a right way and a wrong way to approach a dog if you are going approach it which can help both the dog and you.

Funny thing is, guns are inanimate objects while a dog isn't.

We bought a 6 acre property in the middle of nowhere but then the farmer sold a lot right next to us. He put a 6x12' kennel right next to out lot line. Be got a German shorthair or something and stayed in the cage all of the time and barked and howled 20 hours a day, for years. I wanted to shoot the dang thing by thought better of that. I think it stopped when we moved after listening to it for years. I was too laid back to come over and complain or call the cops at the time.

All I'm saying is before people Lynch the dog or dog breed they should look more closely into why they dog attacked or bit the person in the first place, I don't think it's more of the unpredictably of the animal as it is lack of training on the dogs part and kid, I have seen people do some really stupid stuff expecting a good result.

With dogs people get too comfortable, think nothing bad will ever happen till it does.

I think a aggressive and unpredictable dog is rare, in a lot of cases it's the people to blame.

I don't own any "pits".

The terriers I do have, I would NEVER put them on a chain, nor would I put ANY dog on a chain.

Hard to believe, but a dog is a social animal. Perhaps harder for some to understand as well that if you chain a dog, you increase the odds that the dog can lean to a more agressive behavior, no matter what their breed.
