Ouch! I don't think I could afford that at all.

That's right. I've kept a spread sheet going for a few years, and so far this year my TOTAL cost has been $0.1027254 per Kwh; about ten and a quarter cents per Kwh; a little less than half what buickanddeere is paying.

Don't forget the exchange rate.. 1 Canadian dollar= $0.75 US dollars.

I had no idea what the exchange rate might be now. It's been 24 years since the last time I drove across Canada to Alaska.

Well, you can't just consider the exchange rate. There is also the issue of the avarage wage rates in the two countries (Canada tends to have higher wages), as well as other household expenses. (For example, you can get a mortgage in Canada right now for a little over 2%, and there are no "up front" bank fees.)

So it can get very complicated. For example, back in the 80s I was offered a job in the US, and I had to compare it to another job in Canada. I had a heck of a time trying to figure out which one was the better deal. There was the salaries, the exchange rates, the benefits, the cost of housing, the medical costs (HUGE) differences there), the cost of a hamburger at McDonald's and prime rib roadts in the grocery store, the price of gas, etc., etc., etc.

Yep, since I keep pretty detailed records of my vehicle expenses and mileage, I had to figure the exchange rate and then convert liters to gallons to calculate my mileage when I drove across Canada.

Forget the exchange rate. That's pushing 4000kwh. That's ALOT by any standard

This is a common belief (Canada has higher wages than US) because it was true for a brief time around 2012 or 2013 (primarily because of exchange rate fluctuations) and some US media (primarily New York Times) made a big deal of it. In 2015 (last year I could find data) things had returned to normal with Canadian wages about 15% less than US. This is a direct reflection of Canadian productivity being about 15 to 20% lower than US (varies widely by industry of course).

Wages are easy to compare, but, as noted cost of living is much more complicated.

The commercial rate I pay is about 22 cents per kWh calculated each month by taking dividing total electric charge by kWh used.

Bills range between 10 and 16k per month with summer being the most usage.

Short term, if we covert my baseline kwh (before taxes on taxes on taxes....) of 18cents to USD, it looks a little better..... but that doesn't really help....

Not long ago we were close to par with USD. On this topic, currency fluctuations don't help most Canadians. Most of us earn income and pay bills in Canuck bucks...

IIRC, some of the best rates on here were from Idaho.... still down where we were paying something like 25 or 30 years ago.

Unless I can count on being totally off-grid, (the trajectory of) electricity rates are one of the key things I will be assessing wherever I end up retiring....

I haven't followed this thread but will throw in my twenty cents per kilowatt here in MA. I have a Ford CMax Energi that I use mostly as a hybrid but do charge up in the summer. a 6 kilowatt charge costs me about $1.20 and takes me 20 miles. Just about the same as gas these days ($2.20/gal and 40mpg). Our electricity is mostly from natural gas these days with some hydro from Canada and some nuke as well. Very little to no coal powered generation in MA market as I recall. Wind and solar get lots of press but don't contribute much (yet).

One of the reasons I would (back when, and now) consider moving to Texas is the low taxes. Our taxes here can quickly chew up any alleged higher wages. Consumer costs here also tend to be higher - you'd puke if you saw what we have to pay for most Automotive parts - EXACT same part, AFTER exchange rate variance.

Besides, if I moved to one of the USA border States, I could benefit from the Canadian electricity we send your way for free, or pay you to take. They say people get the govt they deserve..... can't say I've ever aspired to be a corrupt idiot....
