Telephones... then and now

There is no dial on phones in the last ... what 30 years? But the term remains. I noticed on my 2014 truck with Bluetooth connection to my smart phone that the screen says "dialing" so and so

It is funny how some things live on..... my cell phone has a default icon for audio recording - shows a reel to reel tape recorder running. With so many things going virtual now, sometimes the only clear visual reference is something from an earlier era.

A young guy I worked with a few years back surprised me with a context correct "We have the technology" verbal reference - I'm pretty sure that his parents were years away from having their first date when the 6 Million Dollar Man was on the air.

When our oldest daughter got married, we had the rehearsal dinner at our house... nice summer gathering. My son-in-law to be had been drinking bottled water from the fridge and wanted a couple for him and his parents to take when they left. No problem.

What they did not know was that I had done a little experiment, he did not like our tap water (from well, 52 degrees) since it was "too hard". He brought some bottled water with him when dating our daughter. I saved the bottles from buying some water and refilled them with tap water and kept in fridge. He had no trouble with them.

That was over 4 years ago, he drinks water from the tap now.
Except bottled water is sealed, so it is obvious when you open the bottle..

Last night I saw my neighbor who except for military service was lifetime telephone man... he started repairing teletype machines in a brick warehouse in Oakland...

He said with the reorganization, the company was using many means to force the old guys out... everyone had to apply for their jobs, get new medical, provide resumes... etc and many simply opted to retire... he didn't and eventually became the old guy that was the only go-to guy left.

After he retired they kept calling him and he said he wanted a contract as a consultant at age 74... he got it.

We had a similar problem when we were privatised and reorganised. A lot of the older hands in Construction and Maintenance took the early retirement and ran. They took with them all the knowledge and experience that told them what could and couldn't be done. Those left were able to make the same mistakes the older guys had learnt long ago. It happened at the top too. They bought in these 'bright' guys with all the 'right' educational qualifications. These guys made some bright decisions from no experience and then moved on after 2 years or so. They were not around when any of their decisions turned to custard but they were able to wave around a CV which showed having worked for 2 years for a Telco.

Seems to be today's business model. No one looks past the end of their nose. My last company was same way, brought in younger guys to run things that didn't have a clue.
