Snow removal in Russia

What that machine is is an ATHEY loader used to load roads shoulder cuttings/sod and highway materials into trucks.

They also use surplus Russian tanks with surplus Russian fighter jet engines mounted on them to melt ice and snow.

I do not have an image of a Russian T-62 main battle tank with a surplus jet engine on it to share. The Romanian oil well service contractors used the same set up to stop the oil well fires in Kuwait in the first gulf war also as it starved
the fires of oxygen and they died out just like a dynamite explosion would starve a fire an oil well fire of oxygen.

The LIRR, Conrail and CSX Railway, uses surplus jet engines mounted on self propelled railcars to melt ice off railroad switches that do not have switch heaters.

The crossing sign is in English and the engines are Southern Pacific. :D

It looks like one from this collection. Many similar ones there.

I've spent hours researching and watching trains plowing snow. I wonder if they ever derail doing that??? Looks hazardous but when you consider the weight of the machine I guess it's probably not so much.

The collection above showed a derailment.

My grandfather was a railroad man during the first half of the 20th century. He had witnessed steam locomotive powered plows derail, and that was usually lethal for the engineers. Nasty business.

In the 50's, growing up in the midwest, I can remember seeing surplus jet engines mounted on flatcars being pushed ahead of locomotives, with a tank car and pump car behind, traveling along to burn weeds and brush clear of right of ways during the summers. Probably burning diesel instead of JP4, but they were effective if in-efficient. They would spray water if needed to prevent destroying stuff that didn't belong to them.
