:D It brought a smile to my face just bringing it up!

Boys love engines, what are you going to do? I mean there's only so much that you can do to help out in the kitchen with Chevy iron :)

I thought i had posted this but can't find it, whaaatever. It don't really belong here but <sunshine>given the density of expertise gravitating to the thread</sunshine> here goes

I almost bought a '99 Cummins 12-valve this morning, it was only when the honest vendor told me that it came with the engine harness as well as the ECU that i realised my gooooof. I no longer want ANY digital engine at all, and i had always presumed that all 12-valves were purely mechanical. I had also thought that '88 was the last 12-valve year but the guy confirmed the year as '99.

BTW if i use this engine 2 things become settled: the hp is minimal so much less tolerance for hydraulic losses but also if i do use hydraulics then the earlier discussed 4500psi motors might again see the forefront. The 12-valve CAN be boosted a little without major rocket-science, all that is yet to come.

Would a flywheel help in a long sustained full load blowing event?

Yes it would not even whimper if the flywheel was the right weight and diameter as it will always counter the
resistance of the load with its mass reacting to the load.

All that is needed is the right type of shear pins and coupler halves attached to the impeller shaft.

A small weight flywheel supported by a pair of pillow block bearings attached to
the 540 rpm gearbox of your Frankenstein snowblower will surprise you no end
as that 4 cylinder Duetz engine will barely grunt when the flywheel reaches the 540 RPM
maximum of the gearbox.

I missed the 'frankenstein' bit :))))

What you outline is exactly how my gearwheel (that happens to also be a flywheel) is set up.

The gearbox through-shaft was lengthened and rests on two bearings. That shaft thus supports the gearbox which out of necessity now must not ever be otherwise attached to the host, only prevented from twisting. THIS is the idea of a floating gearbox. I regularly run it at 1000rpm, it does not have any 540rpm limit. All the 540 that we see is only because that's THE standard pto speed. The fans have to be designed for some speed so they get designed to 540, they lose efficiency at other speeds but are not limited to 540. My fan is of my own design and making so it knows nothing about pto's or about 540.

Arthur Sicard would be most proud.

We have our Sicards and Bombardiers. My son's in-laws go back to the almost GM-founding fathers. There were two brothers (I forget the make & model) who were getting into the formative group or something to that effect and sold their primary prototype. This may have been in Europe or in NY, I don't remember the details. Anyway they were so happy they went out, got royally plastered, and blew the entire cash bag on sin and fun :laughing::laughing::laughing:

If we are talking Dodge Cummins engines, the last of the 12-valve non electronic engines were '98s. I bought one new. Mid model year was the switch to the 24-valve electronic (VP44) engines. My FIL had one of those. So it needs to be pre '98 1/2. Very easy to tell the difference by the valve covers. 12-valve will have individual covers, so 6 of them. Also the injection pumps are way different looking. The one to look for is the inline Bosh pump. I'm not sure that that is the power plant you would want because of the weight (960#s) but it will make lots of power with a few easy mods.

From what I have seen and experienced with snowblowers, its impossible to have enough HP. Wet snow does not blow very good. Getting 100+ feet is going to be difficult. I think your goals are unrealistic, but wish you lots of luck. From what I have seen, I would try to incorporate the rotating drum instead of or in addition to a chute. The less friction getting rid of the snow the less HP required and they seem to cast it a long ways too.

I'll be following your quest, with interest.

If we are talking Dodge Cummins engines...,

Yes, THE Cummins engine that saved the Dodge truck and maybe Chrysler from extinction. I thought exactly what you're saying about the 12-valves too, so either we're both wrong or the vendor will have to revise his opinion. I'm actively investigating because if his engine is non-electronic then I want it. I could even go for a 24-valve but it seems those cannot be de-electronified. They weigh 1100, 1400 with a 727 trany and transfer-case.
