Re: Help! Need ideas to build the \"ultimate\" workbench

A couple years ago I was looking through old threads on heavy duty work benches and there was a picture or series of pictures of what I thought was the heftiest work bench I've ever seen. The guy built it out of plate steel or something. It looked like you could park a dump truck on it. If anyone knows where those pictures are they deserve a second posting.

Update:

Found it here: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...7063417-lets-see-your-workbench-workbench-jpg

Tough to beat steel I-beams for sturdy support. I know there are nicer / more fancy benches out there but for some reason I just think this one is awesome.

This is far from being an "ultimate " work bench but it IS sturdy.

I built this one last year. 3inch thick steel top. Two 20" deep I-beams for the pedestal legs. Total weight just under 2000 #.

I bet it is! At least it looks like the corners are rounded or you would leave pieces of yourself on it as you passed by...

I don't care if it is wood or metal, I just want a clutter-proof top!

One that I use a lot is a platform that I use on my small walkie forklift. It is great because you can easily change the height of the bench. You can lower it to the floor to easily get heavy items on the workbench. I use it more than I use my traditional workbench.

Re: Help! Need ideas to build the "ultimate" workbench

pretty much all my tables and benches have three quarter plywood on top and cover with "monsta liner" bed liner. Of all the roll on bed liners ive used Monsta liner is the cats meow. If that boo boo ever happens it readily fixable repairable. very durable stuff. I do have one table laminated in 20 gauge steel that i weld on though. Bed liner dont like heat.

Filing cabinets make dandy "under the top" drawers for more bulky items.

Mine is wood with a metal top. Yes, I like pegboard, and have air plumbed to the bench. Just home gamer, so plenty sturdy. It's 12'x30" and framed with 2x4 wood and 4x4 for the legs. I split a 1/4 sheet of mild steel and built in a bottom shelf too. Not the best pics since I painted everything black, but give you an idea.

I like pegboard for go to tools, but keep everything else organized here

Here is a pic to show a bit of scale. That box is 6', and the bench is 12'. Many say build a smaller bench so it doesn't get junked up- I'm the opposite. I like it big because, well, the extra space is nice if you have the room. That wall is 30', and with a beverage fridge and man door, the space gets used up fast!
