I found the procedure rather labor intensive, having to remove the skid shield, but no more messy than any other vehicle. The oil filter canister is a bit of a pain, but again no worse than some others. To drain the canister, I used a wine bottle, inserted the drain fixture in the bottle, pushed the assembly up into the drain valve and let the oil drain into the bottle; no mess. I have a motorcycle jack, so used that to get the drain pan close to the oil sump and used a piece of cardboard as a splash shield; again no mess. I've since given up the job to my dealer as at 75 yrs old, I have difficulty getting down and up again, LOL

Yeah, this is pretty clever and is my next approach when another 3,000 miles rolls around. Just pushing gets a handful of oil but the bottle looks like a perfect fix.

My 99 Sonoma had an access door in its skid plate for the oil filter change. It was worth it. Jon

A lot of Tundra owners have apparently cut a hole in the skid plate but I can't verify where the cut was made and howf it worked. I have a plasma cutter and an itchy trigger finger so probably would be willing to cut an access hole.

Once you push the plastic drain adapter in the oil starts to come out. That's when the oil starts to come out and gets all over. How do you push that plastic part in without the oil coming out?
I got a piece of plastic hose that fits the drain adapter - press in quick & straight with drain pan directly below it. Just walk away for a moment and let it empty. Then remove adapter and replace plug/new o-ring, then remove cartridge housing, change filter/o-rings and replace. The socket makes removal and replacement pretty easy.
Yes, during press-in of adapter, I still get a little oil flow before adapter is set, but not much.

OK, I have a sort-of complaint. It's the oil filter on the V8 engine. It's not a simple spin-on filter but rather a contraption of a mess that uses a filter element insert and spills oil everywhere. It's complicated and what a mess.

It's actually a good idea. With the "spin on" filters the check and bypass valves are built into the filter where as with just a cartridge is just a filter. How good do you think two valves built into a $4 filter are? Of course there's also eco reasons why they are switching back to cartridges. Less waste.

I bought a 2016 Tundra with crew cab last year after someone ran into my 2001 4Runner (377,000 trouble free miles) and totaled it. Love the Tundra 5.7 and regularly get 18 mpg, a little less than the 4Runner. Hauls and tows so well and just a pleasure to drive. Did not find changing oil with the filter cartridge to be any messier than spin on, but getting the skid plate back on was a bit of a pain.

Enjoyed watching that Killing a Toyota video...thanks for sharing it. I used to have a 1978 Hi-Lux (bought it new) and it too was nearly indestructible, although I never set it on fire.

Has anyone here changed their automatic transmission fluid? I don't fully trust the dealership.

My 2007 Tundra with the 5.7 does not have a dipstick for checking tranny fluid level. Dealer told me you have to check on side of tranny. Mfg wanted to prevent oil and tranny fluids mixed together, hence only one dipstick for engine oil.

I believe that the transmission is sealed, and serviceable by the dealer only.

If I remember correctly, I think I saw on the tundra forums years ago that the transmission was not supposed to be serviced until 150000 miles

If you want it to last past 150,001 miles, a transmission fluid change (with the correct fluid) at 50,000 miles(or so) is strongly recommended...
