A CC instructor I had in Wisconsin explained to us that if your gun is loaded with purchased shells that have the name Defender or something equivalent in its name you will stand a better chance as a defendant in a trial. Any bullet will potentially kill a person, but that conveys you are trying to defend yourself or somebody else. It made sense to me.

What law school did he teach at?

Now you know why you need a backhoe. If the same thing happened, i'd be digging a deep hole.Problem solved.

Yep, just another senseless killing by an armed nutcase. Now what if the killer didn't have a gun, wasn't allowed to have a gun, what in the world would have happened? Maybe the 'intruders' would have left the property alive? Maybe they would have hung the property owner high for the wolves to naw at his bones?
Maybe they would all be friends sharing a case of Bud?
Guns, everyone must have a bunch to keep everyone safe; except of course the ones shot by the one who decides they aren't safe, and starts blasting away.....

Ahhhh another no nothing that is 100% confident in his gun views and wasn't there and is clueless to the actual facts. Two thugs trespassing ( DROPPED OFF IS THE CLUE - GETAWAY CAR). The Gun nut is alive and the thugs are where they belong 6' under ground.

Maybe not but I would rather not take the gamble while trying to explain to a jury of my peers why I load my shells hot. And i can hear it now, if it wasn't for the hot shells the victim may have lived and by loading hot shells your intent is to do great damage to the person rather than just stopping the threat.

It may never be an issue, I personally am fine just stopping the threat or slowing them down so I can get away.

What cracks me up is gun owners that insist they have to carry a .45 or a .357 mag, something bigger. I carry a .38 with 7 shells, I don't care how big you are, if you get shot in the leg your not gonna be running very fast, also if they have a gun, I'm not gonna be dumb and start a gun fight with a person. Hollywood lied, hiding behind a desk or wooden crate won't help you in a firefight lol.

That's my theory anyway.

What cracks me up is not ever knowing what the other guy is carrying of how big of a THUG will be coming at me. Your .38 will feel like a mosquito bite unless you hit the head or heart to a 350 pound crack head. You only get "one shot" to get it right in an altercation. Also you .38 is useless against a bear hiking in the woods, sooooo, ya go ahead carry your pea shooter I'll stick with my Glock or .357 hollow points

I will bet that there is more to this story than is being reported.

Living in rural Oregon, I think there was a, now legal, pot grow on that property and that the two trespassers were trying to steal some. The women in the car that dropped them off (this is a sure clue, they were not starting a weeks long survival trek) were waiting to pick them up with the stolen crop.

I live way out in the country at the end of my mile long gravel driveway. I always have folks who will drive into my yard and most just turn around and leave. I've never had anything stolen but in the beginning there were some fairly stubborn folks that though they had the right to fish in my private lake. The lake was stocked with trout and they indicated they had fished the lake many times. While I was an absentee owner - we did lease the property to a couple Dr.'s who kept the lake stocked.

It took quite a few "stern" discussions to convince them - now that I was living on the property - their fishing activities were finished.

I never shot anybody - however there were two occasions where I did call the County Sheriff. Interestingly, it took them over an hour to arrive at my house. Had it been a life threatening situation - the altercation would have to have been put on "pause" - awaiting the arrival of the "law".

The County Sheriff advised that I could shoot folks who were threatening to/ or actually doing physical harm, in the act of robbery or breaking & entering.

This entire situation was grievously complicated by a mapping company - that for several years showed my new driveway as a county road!!!
It took the threat of a lawsuit for them to dispatch representatives to my property, verify the "road" as my private driveway and delete it from their maps.

Now I only padlock my outer gate during deer/elk hunting season. I have years & years of experience that shows that while most hunters are licensed to carry a firearm they are simply too stupid to read and understand a NO TRESPASSING sign.

Cat_Driver - It is my firm hope that you never meet a bear - trespassing or otherwise - that has to be dispatched with your pistol. It's a tough lesson to learn that a pistol will usually only aggregate a bear. You best have a 12 gauge with 00 buckshot or bypass any type of confrontation.

There is a VERY GOOD reason that most all Alaskan guides carry either a shot gun or large caliber rifle. Having a pistol - of most any caliber - strapped on is just a myth, regarding protection, and an excellent invitation to learn, first hand, how fast & powerful any bear really can be.

If you think a 350 pound crack head is a tough case - then you will be eaten alive by a 175 pound black bear. He will probably gnaw on your pistol as an after dinner snack.
