The timer on my Maytag washer has failed. I've bought a new washer/dryer at my lady's request. Replacement timer cost is roughly $150 (They range from $137 to $240). Can the timer be repaired? The washer is fine otherwise. I just want to fix it so I can give a functioning washer/dryer set to some family in need. I might just buy the replacement timer but just check to see if I can get by with fixing it myself.

Everything can be fixed if someone is talented enough, and the payoff would be satisfying.

I had a built in microwave in a camper that crapped out. After burning out a $120 meter tester and buying a $100 in parts it still didn't work so I ended up throwing it away and buying a new microwave for $160. But I learned a lesson. Six months later I had another microwave go out in the house. This time I checked the fuses and they were alright so it went right to the burn pile.

Is it mechanical in nature or is it electronic. If electronic does it use discrete components or LSI and SMD (Large Scale Integration, in other words, one big fat IC chip, and is it Surface Mount Devices. Very small devices that are glued to the PC board and wave soldered) If LSI and/or SMD. toss it. You are never going to repair that and neither am I. If it is mechanical, you stand a chance of repairing it if you are mechanically inclined. If it is a discrete component electronic, even if it uses some IC's, if they are "off the shelf" IC's and not custom LSI then an electronics experienced person stands a chance. In other words some nerd like me. If all of this explanation seemed like ancient Aramaic or Greek to you than you have your answer. Toss it.

How do you "Burn" a microwave?

How do you "Burn" a microwave?
All the internal liner is plastic which will burn although not a great idea to burn plastic because some types give off phosgene gas when burning. I like to remove the magnetron magnet from them but that is about all that is salvageable from a microwave.

Some guy use the transformers for making homebrew welders.

I haven't taken it apart yet so I don't yet know. As soon as I get the new washer in I'll do that and see. The explanation is perfectly logical to me.

Don't mention that to the Maytag repair man I know. He hates that commercial.

Yep, I worked in a shop that sold Maytag and Whirlpool, and I can assure you the Maytag man had plenty of work. :)

For 150 you can get a used washer from a repair place or you can trade them yours for a discount. That's too much to spend on a timer that may or may not fix the issue. EBay may have a good one for cheap, though.

My dryer one was real easy to replace. Haven't done washer, but expect it is similar. Watch YouTube videos.

Have you ever wondered what makes that screeching scratching sound when rotating those mechanical timers?

About 40 years ago I stopped by my mother-inlaw's house and saw that her and my 10 year old son had one of those timers all apart. On an old towel was a dozen or more tiny triangle shaped pins that are spring loaded when assembled. These are all different lengths and must go back in the original holes.

I got the **** outta there as fast as I could and do you know what ever was wrong and whatever they did fixed that thing.

Yep, what one man can do, another man can do.
