What do you let your dog chew on?

I used to give our dogs all kinds of rawhide chews. That is until I saw a show on TV that showed step by step how they were made. I can't find a video of the show I saw, but did find this youtube which makes some of the same points.

Now I will just buy bones or other chews.

I have 4 acres of Pine and Larch/Tamarack trees. There are downed branches all over this place and that is what our dog chews on. At least she is not munching on the firewood.

I have a 5 year old malinois. Working dog. Depending on their bloodline, they don't make good pets. What I mean by that is they HAVE to have something to do or they get destructive. They don't do well in an inactive household.
We had a malinois that was supposedly bred in Holland then imported and trained to find drugs but was put up for adoption. We had a trainer evaluate his drug finding abilities and he could indeed sniff them out. He also was trained to protect his handler. I found that out one day when my wife was walking him and met me with my Stihl weed wacking visor/headphone on.

I think he washed out as a drug dog because outside he had his ajenda and would not come until he was darn well ready. When I used to walk him and my French Beauceron around the farm, I would keep a leash on both until about halfway through the walk then release them and they would stay with me. In the house, he was happy with a rope toy to chew on with an occasional half an hour of "tug" time. I used to get those big ropes from TSC for him. They lasted quite awhile.

He is gone now, having had his hips go. I would not seek one out but would gladly take one in if need be. Absolutely, the breed needs a job, some more than others.

Wow, I found what I think you were referring to. Now I have to find a source for organic rawhide chews.

I would suggest people only buy rawhide made in the USA or Canada. Although I think most of us would agree with that for just about anything.

I think if all of us saw how a lot of food that is sold for human consumption is produced, we would all be on a diet.

We like the really durable toys, however they are not indestructible, from Tuffy Dog Toys at DogTuff.com.

Although our 3 month old Golden thinks I am his chew toy. Oh, those needle sharp baby teeth!

3 large labs only get definite dog chew toys. I have never given them anything which could be misconstrued at a later date. And I've never had any problems with shoes, purses, etc. Although my youngest does like to walk off with my wifes gloves for some reason. She doesn't chew them, just takes one outside with her sometimes.

I began with regular Red Kongs, and the oldest dog did well with them as a puppy and young adult. He tries to swallow all bones, having caught a T-bone in his throat as a puppy, I realized as intelligent as he is, he is a bone dunce.

Then I got a new lab puppy, and she 'rices' everything she touches. The red Kongs turn into large piles of red rice sized pieces. She would turn a rope into a pile of threads. She did the same with small black Kongs, but cannot get enough of a grip on the large black Kongs. But typically, I buy only Nylabones. She chews on them and cannot demolish them.

For 'treats' I give them the larger 10" or so, rolled rawhides from Costco/Sams. My 2 larger dogs typically demolish them within about 2hrs. The smaller girl just carries hers around for days. Its odd, because she trashes everything else, but tends to savor her rawhide.

My 13yo chews only on the rawhide. He doesn't care about anything else laying around. My 10yo doesn't either. But the 5yo girl almost constantly has something in her mouth.

I have never had teeth problems with any of my dogs. In fact, the vet always comments on how good they look. They only get dry dog food and water. No other treats to speak of. They are spoiled by all the pets and scratches... not by food.
