Anyone hunt morel mushrooms?

I live in Southeast Indiana. Mushroom hunting is big around here, but I've never done it. Mainly because I don't know what I'm looking for. This year my girlfriend is familiar with them and we're going to go look around. She says it's a little early, but it's getting close. Any tips? Anyone found any yet?

No but there was a sign on the grocery store door for them. $69.99/pound! I don't get it, we have a few in our woods but I wouldn't give more than $5/pound for them.

I don't like them, but Mrs.tiller wanted to go hunting a few years ago so she asked her friends and co-workers where to go. The tips she received were not quite helpfull. They told her to look in the grass, in front of your toes, in the woods, near a tree, craigs list and in a can at the store.

She never went hunting.

I know people get territorial over their hunting spots, but that's just mean.

Wife and I hunt every year. We aren't hugely successful because we don't spend enough time at it. We'll find a bread sack full which is plenty.

Normally here in Northern Missouri it's late April before many are found. This year ground temps might be a bit warmer than normal so maybe a little earlier. I think they are being found now at Kansas City and South.

My tip would be not get stressed over it. Take the time to enjoy being out in Mother Nature's world with your girlfriend. Maybe after tromping around for an hour, find a nice spot and sit down, lean up against a tree and visit while watching the World. It's good for a human's Soul.

Amen. There's no such thing as a bad day mushroom hunting; even if you get skunked it's still a beautiful experience in the woods.

Out here in California mushrooms have well-defined seasons and we are just entering prime morel hunting time. They are abundant in the Sierra nevada during snow melt, especially where a forest fire has recently occurred as the dying tree roots send signals to the fungus that it's time to bloom. We went last year in a burn scar (first time hunting morels after many years of chanterelle and bolete hunting) and looked for two hours with nothing to show. I went to take a pee behind a tree and found that i was inadvertently staring at one on the ground. As soon as I saw the one, then dozens more appeared and we went home with 5 or 6 pounds! It was like one of those magic eye patterns where you stare and stare and then a dolphin appears. I like them on a white pizza -- delicious.

Sautee'd in butter sliced in half w/garlic, mmmmmm Don't worry, they are very easy to ID, I've heard of false Morels but don't think they are poisonous. Better google that one! We used to get white & brown, the white being the first to come. I don't think they grow up here in Maine.

I used to go Matsutake mushroom hunting in the fall in the PNW heavy forest with my Japanese buddy. We would sell them to his dad's restaurant and a speciality market. We would get at least $20/lb back in the day! Word of caution though... carry a map and compass in the heavy brush/forest. Amazing with your head down wandering for a few hours how far off you are from where you think you are! Also carry a few other things, like water, energy bar, a whistle, and dress appropriately.

We would always be very prepared and stick within sight distances but one time near the end of day we decided to check out a new location. Stupidly we left our 'survival' gear in the truck while we just poked around for a 'minute'. We ended up getting split up, lost, and it was not a good feeling. Luckily found each other walking down some railroad tracks a few hours later. Then had to hitch a ride back to our vehicle which ended up being about five miles away arriving at dark. Important lesson learned!
