Ah-oh, I said yes

I only have a cell phone and I only answer the phone if I know who is calling and I'm actually looking at my phone when a call comes in. My phone is always on mute, so I never hear it. I used to answer anybody with my area code, but the scammers have figured out how to fake that too. If it's important, they will leave a message. If there isn't a message, then it was probably a scam.

Even if you have your phone registered on the do not call registry, the only thing it cuts down are the actual telemarketers. Scammers are using voice over IP, or hacking and using random phones.

I've gotten three separate calls from card holder services in the same day. One was local, two were from other states. Calling the number back usually results in a recording saying the phone number is disconnected. Occasionally I get a live person wondering why I called them. I'll then explain to them about getting a robo call or scam call from there number. And send them a screen shot of my call log as proof.

Had a scam call from Microsoft tech support a while back. Work phone showed a number originating
From Ohio. Several hours later, they called my personal phone and it showed that the call came from China. They left a voice mail  Got to looking at the rest of the numbers and realized that it was the same number that called my work phone earlier in the day.

Absolutely correct, telemarketers are using voip services in the case where you called back and got a disconnected recording the caller has two or more telephone numbers. They have used one number as a spoof on caller ID fort he line they called you on, this is why you got the disconnected recording.

for example If you have an X that will not pick up on you number caller ID, use her mothers number as the spoof caller ID you will through every time, now when the X hits redial from the call you just made she'll get her confused mother answering the phone.

Spoofing a caller ID using voip is easy.

i tell them to just go off and kill themselves. the stinking scammers. i true fully do. also speak low / softly so they gotta turn up volume some, then YELL, speak softly then YELL some. just so it hearts there ears. i no longer hold back.

I dislike callers as much as you do. BUT, I try to remember if it's a live person they are trying to make a living 99.99% of the time, legitimately. You can politely tell them no and hang up. Then block the number and report them to the do not call registers.

What I don't understand is why you let them get you so torqued up over nothing. Do you think people have the right to just call you and start asking questions and you have any obligation to answer? THEY DO NOT. When they do it doesn't require you to be a rude sob.

Very good point about being a SOB.

What exactly is the 'if one answers yes to a scammer question' thing about?
I'm not familiar with the details on this.
And I have to keep my land line alive because my phone company says for me to have their fiber optic service I must have the land line live, which we never use- we refer all calls to my wife's cell- so I don't have to deal with the idiots/scammers/telemarketers, etc.
There has to be a way to remove the lnd line without it causing me to pay more to have the fiber optics service. The telco says I get the landline and fibre bundled, and separating out the land line will make the entire cost more $.
I would really like to kill the land line, and still have E-911 available.
Any thoughts?

scammer = fraud, deception, misleading, cheating. nothing legit about that. there is no good reason to tolerate it either. and i will be as rude as i can possibly be to the scammers. figure me as a old sturborn bull headed man, that is set firm on scammers, that will never change his mind about it.

Coyote machine, recently scammers have been recording conversations where they ask you an innocent question like "Can you here me". Then editing the conversation so your "yes" answer is after a question excepting there charges, fees, or services, ect.....

They have had some big stories on the news and radio lately about these scams. Some people have been hit by just calling a number back from a missed call, getting a recording saying "press 1, if you want to be removed from our call list". The person presses 1, and ends up with a $50 charge on there cell phone bill.

OK, thanks for the explanation. How does cutting /pasting a yes answer result in a $50 charge on one's cell? And if one disputes the charge with the cell provider I suspect it can easily be removed, no? Not saying it wouldn't be a PITA to accomplish though.:confused3:

I'm surprised how many of you get actual scammer calls. I can't remember ever getting one on my cell number and only a couple maybe in my lifetime. Wondering if it is a regional thing?

The Do Not Call registry was very effective for us. I does take a couple months to get taken off all the lists if you are already on a bunch of them.
