On Android phones, you can enable "Priority Interruptions Only" via Settings / Sound and Notifications. On mine, I set it to "Contacts Only". That means that if the caller is in my contacts list, the phone will ring. If not, the phone will light up when the call comes in but it will not ring or vibrate. I check my phone a couple times a day and probably at least once a day, I have had a call from an unknown number.

Some may be. But your statement indicates that you think every call you get is from a "scammer" if it's someone calling to solicit your business for their product or service. That's not true. Some are just hard up enough for a job that they had to take a telemarketer job.

My brother had to do that one time. He was cold calling people to offer them a competitive rate on electrical service. Totally legit company. He sold some contacts but he said it was tough. He wound up doing it for a little less than a year before finally getting a much better job.

There is no reason to act like a SOB to someone trying to earn a legit living when it's not called for.

Would you be the person who berates a young person who makes a mistake ringing up your grocery bill? Or try to get them fired because they charged you wrong and you had to go to the service desk to get reimbursed?

Being nice is a whole lot easier than these schemes to take out your frustration on some anonymous voice on the phone.

We have a "do not call" registry for a reason. It is on the caller and/or his/her employer to respect that law and if they don't they need to be warned. Now if we could get our lawmakers to remove the exemption they carved out for themselves, my phone would not ring often.

Jennifer Taylor really gets around... I get phone calls from her from CA to MI.

Just now she called me from TN.

I receive these waste calls at least once a day. And since I have patient's from all over the US, sometimes, I will answer them, thinking it might be one. And... 'Jennifer' is often on the line.

My Attorney General hasn't been able to do anything with them thus far. They are very careful to avoid giving out any information. I've recorded the conversation with the 'real' person, however, when I begin asking questions, they just hang up.

However, about 5 years ago, I had a company in FL faxing one of my offices with flyers for Beach Vacation homes. They continued for some time. I finally sent it in to my State DA, and received a judgment back for $94,000. For some reason though, I haven't received my check from the company. But the faxes have stopped.

I am on the do not call list. But it has not affected these new calls over the last year. IT is a scam, so they don't care about a law.

Very interesting thread
We screen all calls through the answering machine and never pick up unless someone we know starts talking. Seriously considering dumping the land line now that we all have cell phones. Just no justifiable need to keep the land line anymore.
I'm about there also. We kept the land line for years because it always worked. Now if the power goes out I've got to plug in 24 D-cell batteries to power it!!

I registered our cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry about eight years ago. I maybe get 1-2 unsolicited calls per month since registering and almost 100% of those are wrong number calls. If you want to get rid of scam calls - that's the way to go.
We've been registered since it's inception. Last year I was adding at least 2 phone numbers every week, Still inundated with telemarketers.

THANKS!!
I'm trying it.
I was routinely getting calls from some Spanish caller that would leave a LONG recording, eating up my minutes. I turned off voicemail. My cell does not have call blocking.

i tell them to just go off and kill themselves. the stinking scammers. i true fully do. also speak low / softly so they gotta turn up volume some, then YELL, speak softly then YELL some. just so it hearts there ears. i no longer hold back.

I do something similar. I just yell for them to go F themselves. I have zero time or patience for scam telemarketers. Get an honest job. Burger King is always looking for help.

Last I checked the do not call registry lists required one to re-register every year or couple of years/phone line/#.
This might have changed, but even if it hasn't schools, churches, police BA's can still call, soliciting $$, etc.

As far as old farts and Florida, just two more reasons to not grow old and crusty, or move to Florida!
Just kidding.... had to take advantage of the ripe opportunity.:confused3:

The phone rang, caller Id showed a local number so I answer with hello. I heard a half second of noise as if someone was moving their phone from ear to ear then a cheerful giggling girl said she had a problem with her headset. I forget what was said in the next 3 seconds, other than me saying yes and instantly wondering if I just fell for the phone scam that has been on the news lately.

Anyone else fall victim to these vulchers? Is there anything we can do to save ourselves from their deceiving ways?

I have gotten this call twice in the past month.. I cannot remember what I said the first time but the second time i recognized it was the same line she used and knew it was the same recording. I didn't think it was a scam but a way to hold you on the call.. This does it for me from now on I'm not answering a call not in my contacts.. VM is setup.

The weird/scary thing about this is the phone hasn't rang since Saturday morning when we got this call. I called my home with my cell phone just to see if everything was still working.

I used to try to be polite, knowing that some people are hard up enough for whatever reason that telemarketing was the only job they could find. I admire someone that will take a crappy job like that rather than wait for Uncle Sugar to bail them out.

But enough is enough. I'm not rude, I'm not profane, but you've got 5 seconds to convince me that you're somebody I want to talk to, and then I hang up.
