Buying Advice How many kept their old tractor when upgrading to something larger?

Isn't it funny how the wife thing always comes into play when a man is trying to spend money wisely?!?!? I had that problem once. Couldn't buy anything to make my life easier but by god spare no expense for ear rings and high heals. I say keep the tractor and tell her your doing it to make thing easier and faster so you can spend more time with her. If she don't buy it give her a beloney sandwich and a road map.

My X during the big D called one day and said she wanted and expected half my guns and were hers to keep. I told her well then half her jewelry was mine to keep. She immediately said I could keep all the guns. It's all in the art of the deal!!!!

I think it also depends on how old a tractor it is, and how it was stored. If it's only a year or two old, always stored inside, looks new inside and out, and with your 30 hours of run time, I'd keep it if I couldn't get the price I wanted. And if the "lowballing" dealers are the same ones you're considering buying another new one from, I'd make it perfectly clear that the reason you're walking out the door is because they're trying to hose you over on your trade. Maybe if some of these guys start losing sales over their customer treatments, it would jerk a knot in their tails.

It may be a regional thing too, here the used ones, like 5-10 years old, and 500-1000 hours were asking just a few thousand off new tractor prices. Just insane. Maybe your market is different than here?

My very first one I got rid of. One I got money for the other cost me lots to get rid of.

There should be a really strong market for a low hour, 4wd, CUT.... Either he's asking too much or the brand is the problem. I would expect a depreciation of $4-8k but then again my experience has been with Kubotas.

I paid about $24K new. I would be okay with $16-17K. For $12K, I would keep the tractor.

I did more research. The equivalent Kubota would be a L3901. Those are being listed on the local Craigslist, used with slightly more hours, for $17-19K. Assuming a 15% difference in retail prices between Kubota and LS, my LS would be fairly priced in the $14-17K range.

If I got $15K privately, I think I could live with that. So maybe the $12K from the dealer is not that far off, considering the wholesaler wants to make a profit plus needs room for repairs in case.

So then the question is, would I pay someone $3K to be free from the hassle of having people coming to my place to look at the tractor, plus time lost dealing with that? Hmmmmm.....

Why not list it on craigslist for 13,500 or 14k and try to get it sold in a couple of days to the first person that looks at it? 12 grand is a giveaway. A couple grand more is still a bargain.

That's a pretty low price. I think the L3901 is much less tractor than the 4040. But, I guess Kubota is 'more' brand than LS so maybe that evens things out.

You've had some troubles with this machine, too, as I've read your other threads. Maybe it's best to be done with it?

I experienced a similar situation this month. I had a 2001 L3010GST with heated sims cab and LA492 loader with 2,380 hours. Wanted to change from R4 wheels and tires to R1 and priced them out at the dealer. All said and done would have cost just under $3k.

Ended up buying a pristine used L3430HSTC with factory cab they had just taken in on trade. They offered me $7,500 in trade for the older one. Said no thanks and brought it home with me as well.

Listed it on craigslist for $11k figuring if it didn't sell quick I would just continue to use it as it had pallet forks.

It sold yesterday for $10k, but even if it had taken 6 months it would still be a better move than taking it in the shorts on a low trade offer.

I would list it up for private sale at $15K. You can screen out a lot of tire kickers and bottom feeders by talking to them on the phone before letting them look at it. I sold my last tractor that way. It took a month or two but I sold it without too much drama. The biggest obstacle is most buyers don't have cash laying around so you are competing with 0% dealer financing on new units. You might talk to the local agri credit or banks to see what kind of used tractor loans they offer. It might help with selling it if you can the information available to a potential buyer who doesn't have cash in hand.

A lot of it has to do with what the market will bear. Around here, an LS tractor would probably sit on a dealers used equipment lot for a long time because most costumers would not know the brand. No dealer is going to give a lot for a trade if they feel that they can't turn around and sell it in a timely manner for a price that will make them money. It is not so much of a snobby Big Name thing as it is simple economics.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but if memory serves options on the L like cruse control, electric over Hyd PTO, remotes and extendable links are standard Equipment on the LS. So without actually looking up the specifics If that is indeed the tractor to use as a comparison that would put it in the higher end of your comparison and as someone who buys and sells a lot of things I would start off a bit higher and even be willing to show the cost of adding those things to a potential buyer.

Based on all the info given so far and my memory of the tractor the last time I looked at the XR40 I would keep it here if it was my personal machine if the offer was anything less than 17,000 if I didn't need the money to buy the next one and my separation price if needing the money would only be about a grand less at 16, considering the low hours. Now remember I do have use for multiple tractors and have no problem with parking.

In his thick accent he asks: "Why you have 2 tractors?" I told him probably the same reason you have 6 Porsches and 3 Audis.

I would absolutely keep both if you can afford to. There's a lot of jobs that a 40 HP tractor is great for that a 70 HP tractor would be way overkill for. Also, since you're prepared to take that kind of hit on the selling price, you can always sell it later. I doubt the value will go down much more if any at all.

I currently have two tractors, but I could definitely use a few more. I'd love a little B Kubota with a cab, MMM, loader, and front mounted snowblower. Also, something like a Deere 3020 or 4020 would be handy on occasion. Dreamers can dream, right?

I have an LS XR4040H with 30 hours on it. I want to upgrade to something in the 60-70HP range with a cab. I looked at trading in my LS, and the dealers lowballed me horribly ($12K). It has been really difficult to get a decent offer for it privately. I am thinking that I might as well keep it. But, the wife wants me to sell it before upgrading, lol.

How many of y'all kept your old, smaller tractor? I like the small one for maneuverability, but it lacks power for the tasks I need to do. I would keep it for mowing around the house and other tight spaces.

I did have 10 acres only with 2 tractors. 35 hp each.
