Changing engine oil in GMC Duramax

The oil life monitor on my old 2003 GMC that I just traded in and my 2008 GMC both tell me to change the oil at about 10,000 miles. I take it to the dealer and they use the AC Delco 15w40 oil. The 03 had 217,000 miles at trade in and the 08 has 137,000 miles without an oil issue and neither uses oil between changes. I am waiting to see what distance the 2017 goes between changes. So far it only has 2000 miles on it.

The oil life monitor is easy to reset if the dash message annoys you. Turn key to run position but do not start, depress accelerator pedal fully to the floor 3 times in about 3 seconds, then turn key from run to start, allowing motor to start. Let it run a little then turn off. Should be reset to 100% oil life. Gets rid of dash message, go by your preferred mileage intervals. I run regular Rotella 15w40 at 5k changes in my Ford diesels. Could probably go longer, sometimes do, due to life circumstances, but I aim for 5k.

Diesel oil picks up alot more soot than gas motors, and for that reason I do not like the idea of longer oil change intervals. The oil may not be broken down yet, but is so contaminated with soot that I prefer to change it at 5k, using standard dino oil. Synthetic has its place, if you like... in gas motors, where the longer changes make use of the expensive oil, without the soot contamination.

X2 Rotella T 15w40 every 5000. I don't see any sense making it more expensive by throwing synthetic at it. A 5k interval is easier to remember:2cents:

I inherited a 2007 GMC 2500HD Duramax from my father when he passed last year. I had the oil changed and fuel filter changed after I got it at around 122,000 miles. My local mechanic uses Synthetic Amsoil and put 127,000 miles on my sticker for the next oil change. I am at 125,000 right now and my truck is telling me to change engine oil soon. The oil is at the full mark and does not look to bad. Do these trucks automatically tell you to change the oil at every 3000 miles? Also, should I go ahead and change it anyway? I thought you could get longer milage between oil changes when using the synthetic oil. The last thing I want to do is hurt the engine on the truck.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Find out exactly which Amsoil diesel product he used - they have various levels of long-life performance.

Example - but do not assume this applies to yours w/o verifying....

AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil 15W-4

Turbodiesel Pickup: Two times (2X) OEM1 recommendation, not to exceed 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

In contrast, at the bottom end of the Amsoil range, their OE product is only rated to meet the same as factory OEM interval.

Thanks for all the responses. I reset the the the oil life message and will go ahead and change it when I get to 127,000 miles and then use that as my starting point going forward. Interesting information from everyone on the different oils that are being used and time frame between oil changes. I think I am going to stick with 5000 miles but change using the amsoil synthetic based on what I have read from everyone who replied.

One more question, how often do y'all change the fuel filter? I have been told you should change it every other oil change.

All the insight/info that has been provided to me on this site has always been outstanding and informative.

It has a fuel filter monitor as well. Scroll thru all the driver information options.

Every other oil change. Told to me by an injector machine shop.

It seems like overkill because you cannot visibly see water in the fuel but a very small amount of water will increase wear on expensive injectors.
