Why do you say that?

Simple the Mowers sold at big box stores are only GREEN not built by JD and no not set up by JD .
Did you think the big box green mowers were set up at a JD shop (dealer) then moved to lowes to be sold as John Deere Tractors . People are buying them and think they are in fact buying a John Deere when they are not really .

The size of the down payment surprised me. The base price for the Series 1 base model is 5K more than what
I paid for a 2008 Isuzu I290 2 wheel drive pick up with 2,012 miles on it in 2010.

Back in the mid 80's I bought a new truck and a new compact tractor, the compact tractor cost a little bit more than the new truck,,, wanna guess which one I still have? The truck hit the scrap yard a few decades ago, the compact tractor still performs like the day it was delivered and I could likely still get 50%+ of the purchase price returned to my wallet on a sale.

You really shouldn't be posting about stuff you know nothing about- allow me to "educate you" they are in fact buying John Deere- ( albeit low end John Deere made to sell at a specific price point) made by John Deere and assembled in Tenn ( in a John Deere factory) , from there they are shipped to either a dealer or a big box stores in crates-- the big box stores are not even allowed to uncrate them, they are uncrated and set up by a John Deere tech from local dealership- that's why all John Deere 100 series you see at Home Depot or Lowes already have a John Deere dealer sticker on them.

Ummmm, your info is incorrect, they are made by JD and they are setup in our area by the local dealer, either in their shop or a tech is sent to the store, each one has the local dealers sticker on them and the local dealer has the same models sitting in his showroom.

The big issue with the box store models is they are assembled with components to meet a price point of all the other big box store brands being sold which means you cant put a quality Kawasaki engine, a K66,72 or 92 axle, and other quality components in them and attain a less than 2K price point so it gets less expensive components which certainly don't have the life cycle of the good stuff. The other issue is the buyer, some think a 2K machine should work 5 acres for 25 years without issue, get real, not happening, you get what you pay for. Buy an X5, X7, or series 1, any of them over the long haul will have a lower overall cost and same purchase coin to keep replacing the cheap stuff every few years over time.

Quality stuff costs money- The price of a 1 series in line with what other SCUTS cost. You cant have it both ways you complain about a cheap la115- and then complain a 1 series is too much money.

This is one of best posts I've seen on this forum and is 100% correct-- you have a 1/3 to 1 acre flat lot then a D100 series will last you 10 to 20 years ( depending on how you take care of it) you try to do too much with it ( or any other low price point mower) it will last 200 hours or less.

I have less than one acre of so called "grass". I simply hoped that I bought high a quality machine equaling the ones that were made in 1968-9 I was not complaining at all. I am and have been examining the issues I have with a limited income and the "Wonderful" State of New York burying my driveways with snow and ice and excess rock salt making ice dams causing water to dam up and become impounded and backing up hill 150 yards up the road from me in the drainage ditch and a blocked culvert on the absentee landlords property that they do not take care of or rip out as the entrance to the property is blocked.

Unfortunately you need to be looking at an X5 series or X7 series to approach the quality/ruggedness of a GT from the 60's/70's. I have an X3 series I mow with and its well built but no where near as rugged as the old 70's GT I primarily use for snow duty. I don't even own snow equip for the X3.

Not completely accurate, depending on the location of the box store in relationship to a dealer the machines are set up by a dealer. If the dealer is close enough they can even require that they perform the set up on all machines sold from either Home Depot and Lowes the box stores do not get a choice in that regard. The dealer is then paid a fee by Deere for setup and a customer call back. The dealer drives to the location and will set up anywhere from 4-100 machines for them at their location. It is the same for online orders via the box stores, depending on location of actual dealer machine is shipped to them for setup and delivery if arranged. In my community the JD dealer is at Home Depot about once a month setting up machines according to the svc dude.

The Lowes an Home Depot john deere Mowers were a big mistake for John Deere .

Incorrect here as well, there has been a baseline unit sold outside of the dealer network for 20 years now (think sabre 1997 they could be purchased at best buy etc). The real success did not actually happen until the start of the "green" 100 series mowers and added Home Depot & Lowes. The # of machine moved is staggering and gave Deere a pretty big slice of the purchasing segment that cares nothing at all about anything other than a price point (turns out that buying segment is over 50%). Deere did give dealers an opportunity to market these machines first but because they where not a "traditional" machines many dealers chose not to sell them initially. Hence the retailing of them in a different market, because it was so successful is why dealers for the most part now actually stock and sell many of the 100 series units...cause they sell a lot of them. And for the avg homeowner they are perfectly acceptable and backed up by one of the best parts distribution systems on the planet.
