Chlorine lock on swimming pool?

It wasn't a pissing match until you made it one.I never saw you post that you were a pool expert. I must have missed it. Keep buying that junk that was made to wash clothes in if that's what works for ya.

I posted what works for me, and you begin to tell me it's all bad stuff and how your chemistry is better than mine , etc, .

I don't care what you use in your water and it works for you, stick with it. I'll stick with the great stuff I've been using for 20 yrs and doing a great job

Next time I see the old man that installed my pool, I'll let him he must be nuts telling people to buy a good grade of chlorine.
In the 20 yrs I've owned my pool, I never drained it once for CYA you speak of. I have drained it twice to replace the liner. 10 years out of each one.

I have never been told by a pool store to use their products, But I doubt a fireman knows as much as a a guy with 30 yrs installing pools.

My water is always crystal clear and the chemistry spot on.

Keep using your bleach with the so called good stuff. I'll keep saving $$ using the great stuff.

You kept referencing chlorine. You are using cal hypo. Atleast be accurate in what your recommending. Here's the search result from chlorine at Leslie's.

Chlorine, Shock & Alternative Sanitizers

Chlorine is a generic word in the pool scene to mean several types of products. Some add cya like Tri-chlor, di-Chlor. Very rarely do I even hear about cal-hypo. Yes, it does have its place. Since you have a liner pool, CH isn't nearly the concern it is for my gunite pool. These are considerations plaster/gunite owners have to think about when deciding on a product for sanitation.

As far as my occupation goes, I'd say it covers a wide array of chemistry and knowledge about water and what it is. My pool builder while not nearly as old as yours will be the first to tell you I know more about the care of the pool water after completion than he does. Would you believe he asks me for advice on some troubled pool chemistry too or would you just write that off to a terrible uneducated contractor. He will tell you real quick he knows everything you can know about building it but the maintenance side for the chemistry is over his head. We have a saying for guys like you, you're dinosaurs and when you find something that "works" (which is a relative term) that's all that type will do. Anything else is rubbish. We all know what happened to the dinosaurs. I would love for their to be a one stop solutions for taking care of pools but there isn't. Luckily for the young thunder cats that like to learn and educate themselves on different products and uses can learn lots at TFP. I buy nothing from a pool store. Everything can be bought between Home Depot/lowes and Walmart for a huge savings. Guess that's where my money goes since I blow it all on bleach

Here's the MSDS sheet on Leslie's Power Powder Plus...

Looks like calcium hypochlorite... (powdered bleach)

Calcium hypochlorite - Wikipedia

as opposed to sodium hypochlorite... (liquid bleach)

Sodium hypochlorite - Wikipedia

Yes, it has greater available chlorine than liquid bleach or liquid pool shock.

I only have 12,500 gallons in my pool. Since I don't add chlorine to my pool EVER during the summer unless a squirrel drowns or a little kid poops in it, and I spent a total of about $18 on bleach last year, the point's kinda moot for me. :)

I have found a couple squirrels in mine. Moles all the time. Have had a few birds drown in the pool.

Anyway, if what ever you been doing works, continue. It would cost me double to do what you are doing, even though It appears I have been using some very bad stuff, It has worked for 20 yrs and the water has been great.

I'm moving to the farm and will be selling this pool to someone else. I'll tell him what I have been using and getting excellent results. If he chooses to use something else, it will be up to him.
I also have used a polaris cleaner for 20 yrs. It may have been bad as well, but It always kept the pool very clean. Especially after a storm.

After the 30th of next mo. I'll be out of the pool business, unless I install an above ground for the grand kids

Wow, this is kinda comical. Unless you own a real test kit and run the numbers you don't really know what you have. Go to that website and you'll see tons of people who have tested their own water (simple with the correct kit) and took the same water to a store just for the fun of it. It often didn't match but always consistent testing multiple times on their own test kit. Of course not all stores are created equal, the ones around here seem to be populated with high school kids. As for plain old bleach, it is the good stuff, just water and chlorine. The concentrated stuff at Walmart is 8.25%. I used to buy 12% in large containers from a pool store but didn't save much and usually ended up with it on my clothes. It also has a shelf life once open. My pool only needs a cup or so a day to maintain when the levels are right, it is large (18x33) for above ground at over 15k gallons but no deep end so not as much as a big in-ground. When using the SWG it seems to be around 6 hours to maintain the proper level and it's a small cheap unit.

As for the Leslie's CYA reducer, first I've heard of it but it looks like it came out 2 years ago. Here's a thread on it, I have yet to read it all but will.

I'm really glad that this has worked for you for that long, others are not so lucky. Maybe something you did brought it down like lowering the water level off season. BTW, your grandkids need a pool. ;-)

I must know a little about pools myself. They say if your chemicals aren't kept right, it will shorten your liner life. Most people I know never got 10 yrs out of their liner pools. 8 is about the best they could do

My son is a fire/ medic. I guess they didn't send him to water chemistry classes. His was taught Hydraulics, and medical. He is an AO at times on the truck, sometimes on the engine. Other times On the rescue truck

As to the Tri Chlor. That's what my tablets are. Unless you use salt, or baquacil, you use chlorine.. It's generic. like coke. Everything here is coke. Doesn't matter what the name says

Never lowered the water in the winter. I would always shock it real good and put the solid cover on. It stayed covered all winter.

Maybe all the rain in the summer helps. All I know is, I have never had any issues with my water quality since I've had this pool.

I'm glad I didn't, I may have filled it in. Use to get waaay to busy in the summer months to fool with it

Maybe the grand kids will be happy with a pony and some chickens LOL.
No doubt, they will miss the slide and dive board, and the hot tub.

What's an AO? I've had to go to hazmat and while I have a huge hate for level A suites I like the science behind the chemicals thus my interest in the pool and keeping it balanced. As you mentioned, coke. It's a regional thing which likely contributed to my confusion when you kept referencing chlorine at 73%. I had no idea what you were talking about until I started piecing it together with the mention of the bags of shock and figuring it out to be cal-hypo

I gotcha. I was a D/O which is driver/operator and now am a lieutenant or company officer. My truck runs well over 3k calls a year and the tower runs 1k at the station I'm at. Busiest house in the county and we still have 7 other stations. Have a tiller coming in around the end of the year.

Being a driver is where it's at. Don't have to deal with the headaches and man power issues as much

DO , AO sounds like the same thing. Again, Different terminology. He doesn't want an officer position. Less headache.
I think they have 5 stations and are currently building their 6th station.

They must pay more in texas than they do here. Those cement ponds ain't cheap.
Buddy of mine has an old cement pond and it's something wrong with it every year
