I taught the "Women's Handgun Seminar" At a local Bass Pro for about 10 years. I grew up with a pistol in my hand, or nearby. But trying to explain to someone why ones "worldview" would think it a good idea to be prepared is pretty much a waste of time. If they don't think that way on their own, nothing you are going to say is going to convince them.

Of the women that came to the Seminars, a very large and significant percentage were NOT pro gun or wanted anything to do with a firearm, until IT happened. What IT was varied from being accosted, threatened, beaten, or flat out raped. Yep, lots and lots of rape victims. The majority of them went to my Wife's shooting lane and took instruction from her, because they did not want a male instructor. Yes, I have seen and heard it all. This was quite a few years ago, and while some of the women just wanted to learn, because they thought it would be neat, most that came, had "something " prompt the session.
That something, was bad enough to make them overcome their fear, and overcome their bias against firearms, and be willing to put the effort into learning how to defend themselves.

Of all my years I have only needed a firearm a few times. And I have never shot anyone or even shot at anyone. The few times I have drawn it was enough to stop or in most cases preclude the fight. I hope to get thru this without ever having to defend my life with lethal force. I do my very best to "stay out of trouble". And in most cases you can see trouble coming a mile away. But not always. Evil can find you if it wants to. It has darkened my door a few times.

So for those of you that have "boggled minds", or otherwise doubt the wisdom of being prepared, good for you. You can see life any way you want to. I am perfectly happy with you not having, or not carrying or even hating firearms. I just don't care. I am good with your opinion. Just don't try to take my right to think, and do differently.

Great post. My wife (fiance at the time) was very against guns because she did not grow up around them as I did. A typical Saturday afternoon at my parents' house was plinking cans on the other side of the pond with a single shot .22 long. Well, at least until the anti-gun neighbors complained constantly. :(

When I got my pistol permit, I didn't even tell my fiance. I carried it for a week straight, everywhere we went. She had absolutely no idea. When I finally told her, she was blown away that I could be carrying a firearm (LCP) and have nothing bad happen. We sat down and talked about it for quite a while, and in the end she could understand the reason that I wanted to carry. Fast forward 3 years later, we are in a neighboring small city for a street festival, I'm carrying at 4:30 IWB, it's about 35* out, jacket zipped, about 8pm on a well lit sidewalk. We were walking back to our car and on the way three dudes come down off their stoop. It was very obvious, they were all eyeing me down and making a b-line for us. They had been in the middle of a conversation and stopped mid-talk to come off their porch.

A million thoughts raced through my head, was this about to be "it"?

All I had to do was stare directly back at them and unzip my jacket. Apparently that's thug for "I'm not messing around." All three turned 90* and ran down an alley.

Now, I know some anti-gun people will re-tell the story as: so these guys were walking down the street and this random guy stared us down and unzipped his jacket! He was CRAZY!

Thing is, I'm not crazy, my fiance (now wife) saw it too and it scared the he** out of her. I don't care what your race is, color of your skin, anything. I don't care if you're purple and have 8 fingers on one hand and 3 toes on the other. When you stare me down like that and make a b-line off your porch at me, I take that as intent.

Now when we leave the house, my wife makes sure I'm carrying. :)

I have had a couple of incidents similar to that happen. When that little voice is saying something is wrong, it is.

People ask me "why do you always carry a gun? You expecting trouble?"

My answer is always, "Do you only keep a fire extinguisher in the house when you are expecting a fire?"

"I carry so that in the unlikely event that a situation presents itself that I cannot avoid, de-escalate or escape where a threat has the ability, opportunity and intent to cause me, my wife and/or daughter death or great bodily injury have the means to defend us."

What about the concept of always carrying a fishing rod, line and hooks in your vehicle?

You mean you don't? I thought everyone carried fishing gear. Never know when an opportunity will present it's self.:)

Down around here with so many lakes in the area, many people "carry".

Or my rifle, or both. Handguns are pretty much defensive weapons, They can be effective in the right hands. I am pretty "good" with a handgun, but if I know a fight is coming and I can have my rifle and/or shotgun in my hands, that sure as heck would be my first choice. Right after calling 911 to get some help rolling in my direction.

A handgun is used to fight your way to a long gun. Bringing a rifle to a gunfight is like bringing a chainsaw to a knife fight...

Shot gun with bb can be an effective deterrent , Nothing like 50+ projectiles per shot
