How about this -
Go to Russell, apologize for causing him any problems (to get on his good side) then ask him about the closing of both paths (his idea) ..ask him if he would consider 'helping' you to do it. Once completed he has day patrol and you have night..lol. if it accomplishes your goal he would be a good asset since it is obvious he has the capability to undo what you have done...get the troops on your side.

But I agree that you, or Russell have no authority to do anything. But I'd do it too under the easier to get forgiveness than permission rule...

I think you're on the right track, as we both ultimately have the same agenda.

I think closing both trails might open a different can of worms. People like trails. I think you said people also walk on them. I think I'd lay low for awhile. I'm not sure Russell is up for rational conversation just yet. Wait and see how the locals (and Russell) adapt to the current state.

Alternatively, I would invest more energy trying to initiate a conversation with the owner. Even Russell can't tell him/her what to do:)

I walked through the area Monday night. There was even more crap accumulated. Someone had "wrapped" several chunks of concrete with old sod.

Was mowing this morning and noticed someone has pushed all the debris off the path and even stood up one of my landscape timbers.

No idea what that is about, but I'm tempted to run my land plane / grader scraper over it before Russel notices.

Our nearby vacant lot with it's ATV trespassers wake us up at all hours of the night. If they would muffle the loud ones it might not be as big a deal. It would also help if they would quit building fires and throwing their empty beer cans all over the area where they party.
We talked to them nicely, called the police on them when they weren't paying attention to the owner of the property's request to stay out. One of my neighbors covered up an entrance with large stumps and posts buried in the ground, and tied together. The ATV's then started coming to my end of the woods, making it harder for me to enjoy a good nights sleep. So I took a page from their playbook and started piling big logs in the path. Also used a very heavy foundation as a deterrent, but they just drove over the slab of concrete (about 14 inches thick by 10 foot long and two foot wide). So this morning I dropped a oak tree stump over the concrete to deter their entering at this location. Won't stop them from moving it, but it adds to just how hard they want to work over going to the other side of the 1000 acres and entering over there. We will never be able to stop them from entering, but we are determined to stop their entering from our dead end street.
If they stop long enough to try to move the stump, the next time the stump will have a log dropped in front of it, which will last till it rots.
The person with the most patience will prevail, and this is my home, not theirs.

When we had our neighbor problems over 10 years ago, I put up "No trespassing" signs again (seems they disappear and need to be replaced). One of the signs was in the middle of my property line (about halfway down the line from the county road) which just happened to be facing the neighbors driveway, so they are able to enjoy it every time they leave their house. It has had to be put back up a few times, but I plan on keeping one there forever.

Judging by Russell's back yard, I don't think the "old sod" came from him.

What I would do is create a bunch of trails further down the triangle with figure 8's and connectors to each other in a concentrated area. That way, the atv's will play on all the new trails and leave you alone more.

Really neither of you have a right to make any changes to the land there, but that also he means he has no more right than you do about how that property should be used.

I really agree with others earlier in the thread. The best bet of all is to contact the current owner or executor and discuss with them and ask permission to make changes. If you have permission, then Russell has no say in the matter and you can try to create some peace for yourself.

Longer term you could throw out some pine tree seeds in the area every so often and if they get started to grow, will be a thicket before long and eventually people will just start going around it.
