Battery goes dead

Glad to see you're back. Is it starting issues or a dead battery? I ask because I have a MTD riding mower with a Kohler 19hp engine in it. I thought the same thing and even made plans to mount a larger battery. I assumed it was just a weak battery or starter but hat it turned out to be is Kohler uses a plastic lever of some sort in the engine to ope the exhaust valve slightly. As the starter speeds up the engine centrifugal force causes the arm to move out of the way so the exhaust valve can close all the way. This is to make it a lot easier for the starter to actually start turning the engine. Since the lever is plastic, like all things plastic, it breaks and ends up in the bottom of the engine. Without it the starter struggles to turn the engine. Usually what I have to do is try to turn the engine and when it gets to the compression stroke and stops turning is to shut the key off for a few moment and allow the pressure in the cylinder to bleed off. Once it does it will turn again and usually keep turning until the engine starts. I though about replacing the lever but I have read that it could last weeks or a couple years. It's a back up mower now to my x500 and I'll probably move it to my apartment complex next spring.

But, Bob, we still are confused as to the exact model of your machine - Ride-on, TLB or oldie?
Many good suggestions on P.1 to help you trace a draining battery (if in fact it is draining).
Crazyal describes the failure of the Compression Release mechanism on a vertical shaft ride-on motor. This was very common in the B&S engines too.
Many batteries were sold to try and correct a "presumed" weak battery when, in fact, the fault was the Compression Release.
A description of the tractor or a photo would be useful.
A report from the son as to current status would be good also.
If you no longer need help just say so and we'll stop trying.

The issue seems to be resolved with a new battery. Its an older L110 JD. riding tractor. Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions.
