How do you eat with chopsticks?

My wife is thai, so chopsticks are common place in my house. I've gotten pretty crafty with them, too. Sometimes I prefer to eat with chopsticks as it's just easier. They're like two fingers where you can grab things that would otherwise be a challenge. You can shovel with them or pick with them, they're pretty versatile.

I never got the whole Chinese spoon thing. Do people actually eat with them and is it a successful exercise or more like chopsticks for liquid?

I've never understood the Chinese spoon. Sure, it stands up but it doesn't fit in your mouth! The weird angles mean that you need to either tilt your head back or stick the handle up your nose to empty the spoon into you mouth. Chopsticks are fine but the spoon has never worked for me.

If you think of the Chinese spoon as a tiny bowl then every thing works. There are some Chinese dishes, most commonly noodles, that are supposed to be served along with some juice. To eat them one put some noodle into the spoon with the chopsticks then dip in the big bowl to get the juice/broth. Then you bring the edge of the spoon to your mouth much in the same way you do a small bowl and slurp away the noodle and juice at the same time.
Unlike the western spoons, the Chinese spoon is never meant to be put into your mouth entirely.

That's helpful. I'd never known it wasn't supposed to go in your mouth. Minibowl with handle would be a better name for it.

Thanks for all the help on this. I am now an accomplished chopsticks user in what I would call a Chinese style variation. May I highly suggest chopsticks with your next takeout. Try it.
