Most states that allow double trailer pulling require that the first trailer be a 5th wheel hitch. Very few states allow double bumper pull hitches. I'm honestly not sure if ND allows it or not, but if they do, the front hitch has to be rated for ALL the weight of the combined set. Look at his front hitch.

BTW, the reason for the pic, which I guess no one noticed, is neither the push mower, or the zero turn mower are tied/strapped down in the rear trailer.
Here is the guide i use. ND does allow double towing. Only limitation is brakes on trailers over 3K and requires on the 1st trailer.

State Towing Laws

No Picture as I was driving , But this past week , while driving south around Tacoma , on the 167 freeway . Caught and past a 3/4 pick-up pulling a 12' dump trailer that had one of those mini excavator's in it . Weight distribuation wise , load looked Good , No real sagging at back of pick up . BUT something did not look right to my eye's . I changed lanes after getting by him , But got stuck behind some slower traffic getting on , thus He changed lanes and came up my drivers side were I got a better look . What I had seen was Very clear then , that there were No , Repeat NO tie downs , chains , straps , nothing , Holding the mini in the trailer . Going straight from roughly the junction of the Hwy. 18 and 167 , South to almost Sumner, ( maybe 4 or 5 miles ) , load looked Good . But let Me tell You , When He hit that big sweeping corner at Sumner on the 167 that brings You around to face West , At likely around 60 mph , Things in that trailer looked to be leaning hard to the left . Then When he took the off ramp for the 512 , which then makes a harder turn to the left , thus now facing south again , Things in that trailer Dang near toppled out . While trailer kept all 4 wheels on the pavement but did lean to the right , the mini looked like it actually came up onto the left side track , ( mini was facing rearwards ) , Then slammed back down again , since the trailer did this weird rocking motion . Subsequently , Driver then took the next exit into Puyallup . Speed was obviously a issue , But if it had actually toppled out , Ugh , Washington DOT and WSP , would of had a field day .

It was almost as Good as seeing those big motor homes flying down the freeway dragging , literally dragging , one of those car hitches . Why ? Been several times over the last couple of years , that the car has actually broke loose from the tow bar , sailed off freeway , while motor home has continued on .

I've seen the lost cars, twice.

The first time, I saw the whole thing. Left turn from Lakeville onto SR37, for those who know the area north of SF. The towing pickup started off briskly and the 55 Chevy on a two wheel tow dolly (carries only the front wheels) fell off as he reached maybe 30mph and halfway through his turn. The Chevy coasted to the far side of the intersection and somehow right through a large open farm gate at the corner of the fences, didn't touch anything, and went another few carlengths into tall grass. The guy stopped immediately.

Second time, Waze warned of a delay for bad congestion. I-80 westbound before Vacavile. When we finally inched up to the front of the stalled traffic we saw skid marks all over the place. Then forward some more and a modern VW that had crossed the ditch and skidded along the fence to a stop. It was all dinged up on the side away from the fence, too. Then a little farther, a pickup with an empty tow dolly. The skid marks told the tale of motorists desperately dodging the loose VW and one another, the dents in the VW showed at least one contact with the moving traffic. Glad I didn't go through there a half hour earlier!

Nice zero turn mower with bagger. the first trailer looks to be a large vacuum cleaner likely used to empty ZT bagger into first trailer.
Actually, I think the first is the bagger for the ZT on the second, looks like the hose on the side of the trailer w/ a deck attach hood

That hose on the side is for vacuuming up leaves from a pile. There is probably an opening in that trailer to dump the bags from the z turn. However, if the z turn has enough traction power to pull that trailer, it would be a great leaf trailer, but would take a very large lawn to fill it. That trailer has its own blower mounted on the tongue. Have seen trailers set up like that one during the fall clean up season here in northern Michigan. Jon

Saw abandoned trailer on side of road today, short single axle. 5 or 6 ft plywood sides, full of trashbags. The back was on the ground, the hitch standing in the air. Serious tail load,

Serious tail load,
... and it jumped right off the hitch.

A neighbor has a HF trailer with 1 7/8 " hitch. He said it bounced off the ball with the coupler still closed. Luckily the safety chains carried the tongue until he could stop.

I replied that I put a 2" hitch on everything for uniformity, even the little 40x48" HF camping 'Jeep' trailer. I've never had a problem.

I switched all of our trailers to 2", only one ball to keep around and less chances of mistakes.

I switched all of our trailers to 2", only one ball to keep around and less chances of mistakes.

Here also. I made the mistake one time of dropping a 2" on a 1 7/8" ball, lucky no issues, but it is SO easy to do, especially when you use a interchangeable ball and forget what you last towed. I've got one trailer left to update, then I'll only need the interchangeable if I have to pull a friends trailer that isn't 2"

Man, I'm so relieved I didn't hit a whoopty-do bump and bounce that trailer off that small ball, I'd have been pictured in this thread!
