Hey my 68 ford 4000 is getting fuel to pump and to injectors, but it still wont crank. How much fuel should be feeding, and should it be a small stream, short burts, or what?? My cousin who use to work on tractors a lot said to have the pump rebuilt.

When you say it won't crank, do you mean that it won't start or that the motor won't crank (turn over)?

It wont start as in it will turn over but seems like it not getting enough fuel. Won't start with ether.

Speak English! You are contradicting yourself.

"It won't crank." = The engine doesn't rotate when I turn the key.

"It will turn over" = It WILL crank. i.e It will rotate the engine components.

"It won't start" = It will crank but not fire. = It will turn over... but not actually fire and run.

:banghead:

You seem to be saying: Your engine will crank but not fire. Correct?

or, same thing, It will turn over and not start. ??

Let's begin again shall we?

First: Is your battery strong and is the starter spinning the engine quickly enough to start?

The diesel engine needs compression to fire and that comes from rotational engine speed. Try starting with jumper leads and connecting to a vehicle with engine running at a fast idle.

Some background will help us help you.

What have you done to the machine prior to this non-starting? Any work or re-fueling. (Did you fill with diesel or perhaps petrol?)

Did this non-starting suddenly occur one day or has it been getting harder to start for some time? How long??

These are not silly questions.

Sorry guys if i wasn't being clear. Good battery, it will crank but not start, i've traced it down to fuel problem, I think. Good fuel, no interruption in lines, good fuel to pump.
Was doing some road grading with box blade and it just died, checked lines and restarted with ether. Got home now wont start at all even with ether.
Had someone check it out and they suggested to rebuild pump, fuel is being pumped but it doesn't seem like enough. I was just checking if you guys could help. How much fuel should the injectors be feeding? A strong stream? Short bursts?
Because mine is small short bursts coming out of injectors. Doesn't seem like enough??
Or is there something else that would make it seem like it's not getting fuel?

Rebuilding the Fuel Injection Pump is a radical solution that the average diesel engine will undergo once or maybe twice in its entire life. It is not a 'casual' procedure and is expensive.

From the direction this is going I am beginning to suspect that you don't know all that much about the Diesel engine so I post this warning for you:

Be Very Careful !!!

Working on the fuel system has two parts.

1. The Low pressure side - The fuel system from the tank filler cap through to the Fuel Injection Pump inlet. "Low" pressure.

2. The High Pressure side. - The fuel system from the Fuel Injection Pump through to the combustion chamber of the cylinders. "High" pressure.

Fuel escaping from the Low pressure side is a dribble.

Fuel escaping from the High pressure side can be at 200psi, or more, and can pierce your skin in fine jets (sometimes invisible to the naked eye.)

You shouldn't see fuel coming out of your injectors because they are inside the combustion chamber of the engine. You may see fuel at the junction of the pipe with the injector when the nut is loosened? This will be an uncontrolled spurt reducin to a dribble due to the loss of restriction causing pressure.

The amount of fuel 'injected' to each cylinder each cycle is minute, but at very high pressure - to be atomised as a spray for easier compressed combustion. The whole tank of fuel should last you nearly a whole day for average working loads.

The engine 'just died' while working - I suspect you have a fuel supply issue between the filler cap and the Injection Pump. Has the engine been hard to start prior to this? low on power? Making black smoke excessively?

Check you have sufficient fuel in the fuel tank. (1/2 full?)

Verify the outlet from the tank is clear and fuel runs freely to the filter. Make sure your filters are clean (by changing them) and bleed the fuel supply to the injection pump.

Is your Lift Pump working properly?

Check the oil level in the engine. Is it over-full? Smell of diesel fuel??

To verify the injectors are opening.. remove 1, hang it outside the engine & hook the line back up..
DONT bend the line to much.. Then crank the engine to SEE if it has enough fuel to pop open the injector.
DO NOT get near the injector while cranking!!! HEED THIS WARNING.. the fuel WILL PIERCE YOUR SKIN..

You could check the fuel pressure if that is possible.

Might also try and purge pump. That would give some idea of fuel pressure of the pump. (It's a guess though )
