A question for those who open carry

In deer season when going to brunch at the local restaurant I open carry. I went to Texas Roadhouse restaurant couple weeks ago, (not a fan for other reasons) but on the front door, the sign said NO OPEN CARRY, so there are some places that doesn't want open carry, they have that right.

And we have the right to take our business elsewhere. We have The Barn store of New England nearby, they sell guns, lumber and breakfast. Open carry is very common.

I have a CCW for one purpose and that is to protect my family and myself. THAT is the only reason I carry. I am not out to have everybody looking at me and saying, "Oh what big balls he has to carry around a loaded pistol". To me ANYBODY open carrying in a business or store is only doing so for that reason. That is to draw attention to themselves.

When I carry I do not want to make it obvious to anyone who wants to rob or otherwise do me harm. If they do try to rob me I have nothing in my possession worth dying for or killing somebody for. I am old enough that my possessions mean very little to me, but my family is precious. My weapon is for PROTECTION FROM SOMEBODY ATTEMPTING TO HARM MY FAMILY.

I do know a couple of guys who open carry everywhere they go. Both of them fell out of the stupid tree and hit every limb on the way down. I wouldn't trust either one to not shoot themselves if somebody said boo to them. So when I see somebody prancing around with a pistol strapped on, usually in a high-rise as obvious as possible holster, the first thing that comes to my mind is the word idiot.

Here in Houston, if you don't carry open or concealed, you are putting your life in danger.

Crime is rampant and only getting worse!

Although I rarely open carry, I'm a supporter of those who do if they want to.
Vermont may be a gun friendly state but we have a lot of snowflakes around here and people legally carrying do get hassled. I might be wussying out, but I just don't want the hassle.
When we lived in PA (another open carry state), I've seen two types of people open carrying. One type was the stereotypical "bad ***"...fortunately, not too common. Most were just regular folks with nothing out of the ordinary.
Even though I carry concealed, I don't make any special effort to hide the gun when I'm carrying on my hip. Just a light weight vest covering it.

while its now legal in texas to open carry i think i maybe have seen 3 people doing it and thats it and i believe they were tatted up bikers. To me open carry=open target, thanks but no thanks i will carry concealed, only place i have open carried is on my own land walking through the woods, but in public, no way.

I prefer my OWB holster over my IWB holster. Especially while working around my very rural, wooded property. If I have to go into town for groceries or gas or whatever, I always have some type of coat on that covers it. So not really open carry. If it is summer time I take it off and lock it in my truck along with MF Jones, my highly protective dog.

Concealed carry permit holders also have the mindset not to do business with any establishment that restricts the carrying of guns, open or concealed.

I have a CCW and frequently carry. On a gun forum a while back this issue was discussed and a guy posted that he had cards to give to businesses that restricted carrying of guns. I posted, asking him where he got them, and he sent me a stack of them. I don't know whether he made them up or bought them. Anyway, I doubt that they would cause a store to change their policies, or that passing them out would even reach the policy makers, but here is a scan and copy of the card he sent - front and back. I have not any occasion to use them. When I go to the post office or a school or government building or airport I put the gun in a safe I bolted under the rear seat in my F150.

I have open carried ... mostly on my own property ... and before I had my CCW.

Going into a (potentially) more dangerous neighborhood and given the choice of being unarmed - or being armed and open carrying (due to no CCW at the time) - it was pretty much a no-brainer: I open carried.

One other time was when I was working outside here at the house and was wearing my back belt which doesn't allow easy access to my front pockets. I had stuck the LCP in a pocket holster inside the back belt on the left front. Ended up having to run down to the corner store for something.

Got some looks from a lady customer who came in ... didn't realize until after I was on the way home what she was gawking at.

On the matter of the original question, how do you know who allows and who doesn't ?

You don't ... unless you've already been there and made the observation.

I was under the impression that (in Ohio anyway) if weapons aren't permitted in a retail establishment, it is to be prominently posted at the entrance to that establishment. Failure to obey the sign, if caught, would result in a misdemeanor charge and fine.

If sign is not prominently posted at the entrance, it is OK to carry.
