A question for those who open carry

/ A question for those who open carry #41
I find it more difficult to deal with the rules in different states than the rules at different stores.

Agree that state laws are a hodgepodge of conflicts. I can drive 50 miles to Ohio and my Indiana lifetime permit means nothing. I would be arrested on the spot for not having an Ohio permit. :confused2: Vaguely recall US Congress is trying to pass law forcing all states to recognize permits from other states but I don't know the status of that. :confused3:

It's pretty illogical to post a sign on a business that says "no guns".

It's not enforceable because if the gun is properly concealed nobody has any idea if it's there or not. Putting metal detectors at every store entry would not be very welcoming.

If it's being carried legally there is probably no threat to anyone. I say probably because one of the most dangerous people I've ever seen, that was about to start carrying, was about to be legally able to do so. Being legal doesn't mean safe.

If it's being carried illegally, or if someone intends harm, a sign means nothing, but it does tell the offender that there may be fewer guns there and therefore safer for him to do harm.

Nobody, carrying or not, should deliberately walk into what appears to be a dangerous situation. We don't expect to get into a gunfight just because we need some new socks at the department store. At some level we need to be able to go about our daily lives in a normal way. People can avoid certain stores to make a point, or they can avoid those stores because it's not safe to enter, or they can avoid them because they feel naked without their gun.

If someone wants to open carry, it doesn't bother me in any way. While I myself would not open carry, I don't think less of a person if they choose to open carry. I'm glad to see it. Better than a gun grabbing crybaby.

Do you actually see anyone open carrying in CA? If so, what are the rules?

BTW, make sure your lift pump is in perfect condition so your VP44 won't fail too.

I have a CCW and frequently carry. On a gun forum a while back this issue was discussed and a guy posted that he had cards to give to businesses that restricted carrying of guns. I posted, asking him where he got them, and he sent me a stack of them. I don't know whether he made them up or bought them. Anyway, I doubt that they would cause a store to change their policies, or that passing them out would even reach the policy makers, but here is a scan and copy of the card he sent - front and back. I have not any occasion to use them. When I go to the post office or a school or government building or airport I put the gun in a safe I bolted under the rear seat in my F150.

Love it!

You have to be respectful to other's. We could all take some lessons in that. If a store owner has a sign posted for No Guns I will respect his/her wishes. After all, it's his/her establishment and they have the right to refuse service to anyone as long as it's not discriminatory based on race, color, religion, etc. To have cards made up to hand out saying you are going to take your business elsewhere is just being a dick in my opinion. I cant carry in my company vehicle or any company property. Not discriminatory, just policy. Sometimes you just have to move on and let the little stuff slide.

No, not in the republic of Kali. LOL. But When I drop off and deliver cars in the surrounding states like Nevada or Arizona, when I stop for fuel at the larger fueling stations, I see an individual with a firearm on their side once in a while. Refreshing to see. Doesn't bother me. :)

My lift pump is just fine thank you! I have a Fass Titanium 150 and a set of Isspro gauges. :) Now if I could bring myself spend the money to build up the 47RE, I'd really put on the mods!

From what I understand it was delayed when Steve Scalise was shot. It is still there, but may not have any action this season

Well I have never won the lottery, but I have needed a firearm a time or two. And I know plenty of people who bad things happened to. As a former LEO, I saw them every day. Many would have been saved if they had some means to defend themselves. I personally think you statistics are in error. But you are free to enjoy and believe in them.:)

As a point of clarification, are you saying that you've needed and drawn your weapon outside your position as a LEO? Did you also fire it at the threat, hit and kill or take down the threat?

My philosophy is "don't start no sh*t, ain't going to be no sh*t". I'm not in fear for my life when I go to the store or the post office. We have plenty of crazies in my town who are either nuts or on drugs or both. I walk down the street aware, but not fearful even though I don't have a weapon on me. My wife locks the front door the first thing when she comes into the house. I don't, because I think the chances of being robbed in my home are statistically insignificant to even worry about. My wife has a couple of softball bats strategically placed in the house, along with a couple of guns because she fears being robbed or worse. The defensive items will likely never be used for that purpose, but she feels better knowing they are there.

It's a glass half full or half empty situation. You either feel the world is a fearful and dangerous place, or you don't. I know that bad things happen to good people on occasion and if you look for the bad, you will likely find it. I was in the fire service for 25 years and I know we can have a different outlook from LE. It makes sense to me, just given the type of job we do. I don't know if the job influences the mindset, or the mindset influences which path we pursue. It would be an interesting PhD thesis for some psych major.

but it does tell the offender that there may be fewer guns there and therefore safer for him to do harm.

I hear this a lot and it would be an interesting study to find out if it's true or not. I think that it's a feel-good fallacy put forth by the NRA.

I'm thinking that a kid with a gun, knocking over the local C-store, gives little thought to a posted sign at the door and even less thought about how many other guns might be inside. Surely he knows the cashier likely has one, right? They are thinking only of the cash in the till and not the consequences.

I have a CCW for one purpose and that is to protect my family and myself. THAT is the only reason I carry. I am not out to have everybody looking at me and saying, "Oh what big balls he has to carry around a loaded pistol". To me ANYBODY open carrying in a business or store is only doing so for that reason. That is to draw attention to themselves.

When I carry I do not want to make it obvious to anyone who wants to rob or otherwise do me harm. If they do try to rob me I have nothing in my possession worth dying for or killing somebody for. I am old enough that my possessions mean very little to me, but my family is precious. My weapon is for PROTECTION FROM SOMEBODY ATTEMPTING TO HARM MY FAMILY.

I do know a couple of guys who open carry everywhere they go. Both of them fell out of the stupid tree and hit every limb on the way down. I wouldn't trust either one to not shoot themselves if somebody said boo to them. So when I see somebody prancing around with a pistol strapped on, usually in a high-rise as obvious as possible holster, the first thing that comes to my mind is the word idiot.

When someone judges others with no idea about their surroundings ,the first thing that comes to my mind is idiot. Perhaps they prance to the beat of a different drummer...
