Very interesting. I don't think I'd ever heard of a spring pole lathe.

That is really interesting, and excellent work!

Curious... are there cracking issues once the finished bowl dries?

Nope! they are turned with a lot of moisture, turning it actually spins water into my face. Once its turned I put it in a box of dry wood shavings of various sizes into my basement for a week or two. I can tell when its dry by the bowl being a bit oval. Then I oil or milk paint them. Cracking normally happens when a hook tool catches, or....if you leave pith in the bowl. Sometimes if its a bit too spalted you need to take a bit more from the center but I have not had any crack during drying.

First time I read about it was in the fox fire books and I was hooked. I did a few web searches and found the bodgers uk site. I guess a bodger was someone who turned spindles for windsor chairs in the UK. The site is filled with all types of information. Now the forum is dead, most of the discussion happens in facebook groups.

RobertN they truly are. The voice of the people they interviewed is captured. The amount of knowledge they preserved is amazing. I re-read them every so often and try to pick a project to do. They are a treasured book series for sure.
