Who rides motorcycles?

I had a 76 goldwing with aftermarket bags and fairing, 90 miles an hour was tops. Never a problem in 80000 miles. Have an 86 that has 90000 miles, it did need a stator. Now I ride a stratoliner.

Traded my 08 BMW 1200 Adventure for a used 14. Took it out on its first big trip last week. Went from St Louis out to Rawlins WY, got on the Continental Divide Trail, and made it as far north as Butte MT. Then booked it back home to MO. 3,500 miles (approx) in five days. Had a blast.

Need more riding time, and less working time.

Long motorcycle ride this weekend, three nights in three different locations covering a little over 900 miles in Northern California. Very hot afternoons, I saw 115F several times on the little handlebar thermometer, but managed to stay cool by soaking a wicking t-shirt and the cloth skull cap I use inside the helmet. Riding the Sierra Nevada foothills in the cool of the morning was wonderful, and the fella that did the routing went out of his way to keep us on mostly untraveled roads with no other traffic. Several places with steep switchbacks going up and down mountain ridges kept us on our toes. Beautiful views from the tops, including one stop at a fire tower where the Forest Service man at the top showed us how he does his job. No smoke at that particular location, but lots of it along other parts of the ride, which skirted several active fires. Saw lots of turkeys and deer, crows and buzzards feasting at roadkill as well. Ended up at the north end of the state, only a couple hours from here, and at enough elevation that on Monday morning's ride the heaters in the jacket and hand grips felt good. Only two small mechanical issues that need taking care of this week, not bad for a 25 year old antique with 142,000 miles on it.

25 might be considered "like new" for us poor folk. :)

25 years wasn't that long ago for us "old" folk!

Turns out the clutch cable was fraying up near the lever, and the little switch that told the ignition lockout that the clutch lever was pulled had gone TU. I'll pick new ones up in town tomorrow when I go in for grocery shopping. Other than fluids and filters, those the first non-maintenance parts that bike has needed in quite a few years, and it's partly my fault for not keeping the switch clean and the barrel shaped cable end in the lever lubricated.:ashamed: Still, both had over 100,000 miles on 'em, so I think I got my money's worth.

MoPops - Of course, I think that's a great ride and the pics are fantastic. I think you pulled off one lucky ride also. I'll just bet if you went to that spot - now - that is shown in your pics - - you would be walking around in smoke, ash & corruption. I've read on this thread that the smoke, from fires out here in the PNW, is reaching as far back as Kansas and Iowa. Check post #420.

I'm sitting in Gig Harbor, about 30 mikes south of Seattle, getting ready to ride east to Idaho and Montana. The smoke from fires north, east and south of here has created a haze thick enough that it obscures details more than a mile or two away. Until last weekend it looked like I could avoid a lot of it by starting off with a southerly jog through Portland and Mt Hood but a large new fire started by kids with fireworks has shut off not only highways headed east from Portland but the Coast Guard has even shut down marine traffic on the Columbia River! It's starting to look like a movie set from some dystopian Mel Gibson movie.

Hmmm- I knew I'd seen the view out my kitchen window before, Mel Gibson movies.......yes. Every morning about this time I look out and the "smut, smog & corruption" looks to be a little less. Then by late afternoon - its all back.

Yesterday I checked a web site - Inciweb - and a report, from the incident commander for the fire in the Colombia River gorge, indicates they probably won't have that fire under control & extinguished until the end of September.

You know - - I don't think I'm going to forget this year..........................
