Hurricane Irma

   / Hurricane Irma #41
I have friends/family who went down to bluetarp roofs after Katrina. From what I have been told:
1. Get lined up with a group that has permits/authorization to go (otherwise you may not be allowed in)
2. Bring EVERYTHING you will need (from TP to water, to food, to fuel) so that you don't become a burden or get stuck there
3. In case the previous point isn't clear enough: Be prepared for NO services, no running water, no bathrooms, no power, no stores open, nothing more than you would find camping in the middle of the desert.

Sounds like what we call 'dry camping' but instead it's really wet. If you aren't more than self sufficient you could end up as a burden. I strongly applaud those that do volunteer! Just need to affiliate with an organization that knows what they are doing if you don't have the means yourself.

Best guess now is Irma will turn north when it's south of Florida. So could go west, center, or east of Florida depending on when it makes the turn this weekend.

ABC News is reporting that Irma destroyed 90% of the buildings on the island of Barbuda ... apparently almost a direct hit.

That's terrible. Hopefully the florida residents have left. Years ago my grandparents lived in florida and we would frequently visit. If memory serves, most of the houses weren't that solid. Concrete slab, and siding over studs, didn't see that many brick/block buildings.

From videos shown on the news.. they got wiped out. Smallish population. 1 airport. Hopefully, help is on the way. Looks like they may be in the path of another storm as well.

Floriday (especially southern coastal FL) implemented stricter building codes after Hurrican Andrew, BUT this will be their first true test. A Cat 4 or Cat 5 makes landfall and it will push homes off the slabs and 15 feet of surge can travel a mile inland.

Looks to me like Miami and Daytona a direct hit then savannah Georgia / Charleston SC then to mountains of SW Va. storm surge very damaging along with wind and rain in Florida

They still don't know the exactly path but all agree Florida is in big trouble. After that it could go anywhere from Arkansas to North Carolina.
