Taking this thread back to tie down stuff... Why do we care about the feds crap? maybe there's a lawyer section in TBN?

Question: : I bought a trailer, 10,400# GW. I already have plenty of heavy chains. I own only one chain style lever over load binder.
Do I need to use chains only to tie down my tractor buy, thus buy more chain binders.
OR?- what about using the Walmart Commercial 3,300 # rated cargo straps such as used on trucking cargo loads?
Load- Kioti DK35SE tractor & FEL-w/bucket & box blade= ~5,300# net load weight.

I found an 11 page thread here that hashes this load thing out pretty well!

In my state/KY vehicles over 10K must have 4 (proper-that takes many pages on TBN discussion:laughing:) chains with binders and under 10K 2 chains with any implements have their own chains.
Binding must pull front/back, right/left. I like the "X" chain setup @ each end, as it does that with a 45deg pull.
I need to buy some ratchet binders @ TSC or HF.
I am considering two of the large 3,300# cargo straps, one over the bucket another over the box blade?

Rock knocker, Here a copy of the law that say's I cant tow a trailer heavier than the pickup. I did a copy and paste
b)
Truck towing trailer.--No vehicle registered as a truck shall be operated with a gross weight, exclusive of any trailer being towed, in excess of its registered gross weight as a truck.

Ken Kegris;4862810 Truck towing trailer.--No vehicle registered as a truck shall be operated with a gross weight said:

Burn. What that says is "no truck can operate at a higher GVW than what it is registered for. This does not count the trailer"
As of Jan 1 2016. and according to my state rep this came from the federal level.
You can not pull a trailer that has a gross wt larger than you pickup gross GVW. So if you have a 7000 GVW trailer then you can't pull it with a truck like my Nissan which has a GVW of 5815. Now I can pull a 5000 GVW trailer as long as I don't get over 5815 on the truck and 5000 on the trailer.

My farm trailer is exempt from inspections that were instituted a couple of years ago in Texas for trailers with a gross rating of 4500 pounds or more. I keep all my stuff road worthy anyway.

To the original question, I run a chain through the draw bar location, one over the provided hook under the front of the tractor and one though the horizontal pipe on the FEL.

Stuart-I'm buying the DK35SE. You use three chains plus what? Do you strap the bucket and what ever might be on the hitch?
I was thinking I'll use the nylon cargo straps on the bucket and box blade I'll be hauling as part of my deal. The seller is a Kansas Highway Patrol LT. and when i asked him as to the straps he said that was an acceptable tie down on the attachments. He only uses one chain on each end when he tows his own stuff.

All I know I had a 6 month old trailer reg at 7000 Lbs GVW got stopped and the the truck was a 5000 GVW and I had to trade my new trailer in for a 5000 GVW trailer or buy a heaver truck. My thinking was the 7000 GVW trailer was safer because it had 2 axles with brakes pulled easier, and was 2 ft longer and could haul my CK25 with cab and mower. The trailer brakes stop the trailer, All the truck has to do is pull it. They did not fine me but I had 10 days to do something.
I had to give my bigger trailer as a trade and be without one for 6 weeks until my new one arrived.
Now for the real kicker was I got stopped with the new one towing my smaller tractor a CS2410 with mower. And was told after not finding any thing wrong and without weighing me instructed me to get my light weight down and/or get my gross weight up. So I weighed the truck and it was 5100 with some tools and a tool box on the back. So I was over weight with basically a empty truck. So I had to go to a class 2 which is a 7000 GVW plate but I can only haul what the door plate is rating me for and that is 5815 GVW. After calling Penn DOT they are saying that is technically illegal to license a truck for 5000 Lb if the title light weight is such that using that figure adding two 200 lb persons and adding for engine oil and a full tank of fuel and if that number come above 5000 the you can not tag for 5000 well the dealer screwed up. so that cost me close to 150.00 to fix that mess. I have a factory installed bed liner and that is 200 lbs without that I might have been OK. I am not making this up I was looking yesterday at the website that rock knocker told me about and I saw the thing about what we are talking about. But I was looking at so many things yesterday. All I know is what happened to me.
Every local police dept that has more than one they would like to have someone who is DOT qualified to assist the state DOT and chad lost his for a while and had to get re-certifiied. He hates it He stated to me he never knows what they a going after in a givin day. and a lot of the persons he has to ticket are local people farmers and such. I have another example, this happens on action days a lot of the men have goose-neck 350 fords, dodge, chevy, don't matter with say with a 9999 GVW to get away from combo license and pull a 12000 goose-neck horse trailer and there getting hammered. they say safety I say MONEY.

If that happened to you, then you allowed it to happen because there seems to be no law on this subject.

I don't use any straps. No particular reason, I just have all my chains cut to the right lengths etc. I run one chain through the bracket that the draw bar attaches to and run it to the back corner of the trailer. When I have my brush hog attached, the same chain also runs across the brush hog securing it. If I am not going to go far or very fast, I just throw an additional chain on the front hook under the grill. When I am going to tow at highway speeds, I run a chain through the horizontal pipe that goes from one side of the FEL to the other. I use ratchet binders and never have had a problem. I usually carry a spare or two in my toolbox anyway. I have found my Home Depot as the best price on grade 70 chain.
